Watercolours of Arkesden
James Merriott takes a trip to this picturesque village that’s only a short hop from Audley End House and Gardens
Situated between two ‘B’ class roads linking Essex to Hertfordshire lies the relatively quiet village of picturesque Arkesden. This ‘off the beaten track’ location gives it the peace and tranquillity equal to anywhere in the county.
Being the lover that I am of isolated country lanes, it was wonderful to revisit this scenic spot that was the subject of my very first feature in Essex Life, back in May 2007.
Completed in August and with perhaps a change in style I had no hesitation to complete again these wonderful locations with the addition of the old post office.
I was much inspired by the assortment of bits and pieces in front of the building.
I particularly loved adding in the convenient seat and, although the person wasn’t there, to have a figure reading was completely in keeping with the pace of life in the village.
Simply perfect.
The Old Post Office
A pleasing composition that poses the difficult question for the Artist, what to put in and what to leave out.
The Old Water Pump
A direct approach, with the pump and signpost given equal status in the composition.
Dove House and Church Green Cottage
For the photographer in addition to the Artist, perhaps the perfect view for the perfect picture.
Watts Folly
Dark tones to the surrounding foliage creating maximum impact to the beauty of the cottage.
The Axe and Compass Inn
A newly installed thatched roof bringing brightness to the shadow side of the roof.
St Mary’s Church
In a magnificent setting with its deep churchyard and foreground village green giving depth to the painting.
