Paul Matthews and Ioana Stolnicu’s romance could be described as whirlwind, and so could the wedding, though that was on account of the weather. We found out more from the happy couple.
“When I looked out of the window on our wedding day I was so disappointed,” said Ioana, thinking back to her special day.
“The weather had been perfect prior to the wedding but was really windy on the day. But our photographer reassured me that the wedding photos would look just great and he was right! He managed to take some fantastic photos with my veil floating up in the air.”
Ioana and Paul met three years ago in Bucharest, where Ioana comes from, when Paul was visiting some friends. “That was in November 2006 and by January 2007 we decided to move in together,” she said.
Then, in July, Paul surprised her with a proposal at Norwich Airport when she returned from a two-week holiday in Romania.
The wedding was held on October 3, 2009, at St Michael’s Church in Aylsham, with a marquee reception held in the garden of a friend’s house near the church.
The wedding had taken the couple a year to organise. Ioana said: “Paul owns a marquee hire company (www.lynesmarquees.co.uk), so we had a very good idea of how the reception would be. We then booked the church, the photographer and the catering, bought the dress and ordered the suits. But all the rest of the details were done in the last six months before the wedding.
“I had in my mind a traditional wedding where everyone enjoys the day. Everything was very well organised so it really lived up to expectations. It was our perfect day.”
Ioana wore a white Benjamin Roberts dress, with a long train, which, on the day, proved to be a great choice bearing in mind the weather and the chance for the photographer to take advantage of the blustery day.
The weather wasn’t the only hurdle to get over – Ioana arrived at the church minus her bouquet. “When I got to the church, I realised that I had left my bouquet at home. Luckily everything was sorted in less than five minutes, thanks to my helpful friends,” she said.
Friends also were involved in the flowers, with blooms for the marquee supplied by one friend who owns a garden centre, the church flowers arranged by Aylsham Flower Club and the reception ones by friends Julie and Margot.
“The cake was also made by one of our friends, Angela, and it looked and tasted fantastic,” added Ioana.
At the reception, guests were served Champagne and canapes on arrival, followed by a three-course meal, before being entertained by a live band, a disco and fireworks until the early hours.
“It definitely was a great day and we received lots of compliments on how well it was organised,” said Ioana.
The honeymoon was put off until January as the couple had always wanted to go to Thailand and wanted to take advantage of the better weather at that time of year. “We’ll be off to Thailand for three weeks, taking in three different islands and staying at some amazing hotels,” said Ioana.
