Wedding shoot at The Mandolay Hotel in Guildford, Surrey
02 Nov 2017
Offering a blank canvas on which to create the wedding day of your dreams, The Mandolay Hotel in Guildford is poised to host couples' perfect day
Showcasing the versatility of this wedding venue in Guildford, this wedding shoot also served to spotlight the talents of local Surrey suppliers. Organiser of the shoot, Gemma Starr of Little Star Events, tells us more...
What was the inspiration behind the shoot?
Tami Vickery, sales manager at The Mandolay Hotel, was keen to show how the hotel really is a boutique, city centre wedding venue and asked Little Star Events for some assistance in finding the right suppliers to showcase this. Tami has an excellent eye for detail and really knows how to accentuate the highlights of the hotel and together we bought together a range of excellent suppliers to create this beautiful shoot.
I chose Hana Laurie - Alternative Wedding Photography to shoot the styled shoot as Tami had told me she would like something a little bit different from the norm and a bit quirky while maintaining elements of a traditional wedding look. I have worked with Hana a number of times before and she fits this profile perfectly.
We wanted to bring together a range of high quality wedding suppliers to create a contemporary, boutique look with on-trend colours and styles. We were keen to explore the theme of ‘boutique’ weddings and how this up and coming theme can be achieved.
Tell us a little bit about the venue and why it was chosen
The Mandolay Hotel is a boutique hotel in the centre of Guildford. Tami had recently asked me to organise their next wedding fair (28th January 2018) and we were both keen to have the right images in order to promote the fair but also to creatively inspire couples about how their wedding could look if held there. It is a wonderful venue with the opportunity for smaller, intimate weddings as well as very large ones. They also have a beautiful garden at the back of the hotel which we wanted to showcase.
What did you choose for the flower arrangements?
All flowers were by Natasha from Floral Studio Events and were incredible. She is preferred supplier at the hotel and her creations are exceptional. In the ceremony room, Floral Studio Events created a magnificent floral centrepiece for the table and teamed this with beautiful posies which sat atop the lanterns which were either side of the white carpet. Floral Studio Events also created a silk arch including the use of the twigs which gives the rooms a real enchanted feeling, along with the detail of the ivy on the back of the chair hoods which were provided by Distinctive Elegance.
In the reception room, Floral Studio Events created tall table centrepieces which looked simply stunning, really complementing the stationery from Coral & Slate. The navy napkins and the chiavari chairs and silver beaded charger plates were from Crystal Hire.
In the garden, Floral Studio Events created a stunning asymmetrical archway which is a great alternative to a full archway and contained elements of the pink and the ivy to tie into the flowers in with the ceremony room.
What kind of look did you want to achieve with the make-up, hair and outfits for the bride and groom?
We were keen to have two looks for our brides. Tatiana had the more princess styled gowns, both from Surrey Brides, and coupled with romantic hair and make-up by CLJ Make-Up. A mermaid style dress and a tea-length dress, also from Surrey Bride, were modelled by Bethan with darker make-up and a stunning intricate hairstyle to show the alternative looks. CLJ Make-Up created such individual looks for Bethan and Tatiana which complemented the dresses they were wearing perfectly. Tatiana also wore the tea-length dress with bright blue heels, coupled with a blue parasol for another chic look. This really did look great next to the motorbike and accompanied the tweed waistcoat and jacket supplied by Hire 5 fantastically.
For the menswear, Tom wears a range of menswear from Hire 5. Hire 5 are fantastic at adding an alternative contemporary twist on menswear and we were keen to showcase how so many of these styles can be suitable for a boutique wedding.
What was the thinking behind the décor for the shoot? How did you tie it all together?
We wanted to go for pinks and navy with rose gold accents for the reception room and I really think that this colour scheme accentuates the room. The navy and white linen really set this off and the addition of the rose gold tablecloths for the bride and groom table and the cake table really helped to create those flashes of colour.
For the ceremony room, we were going for the blush pink and white look and the addition of the textured tablecloths and chair hoods from Distinctive Elegance add an alternative look on this. The cake provided by Forever Cakes for this room is an elegant cake with beautiful floral detail which ties in with the décor of the room.
What kind of accessories were used to create these looks and why?
Helen Norgate of Stella & Dot provided some beautiful pieces to accompany the girls’ looks which really help to finish it off. Eva Designer Goldsmith provided beautiful wedding rings for Tatiana which were delicate and ornate which fitted with the shoot beautifully.
The cake provided by Forever Cakes was so amazing and really bought out the rose gold elements across the room.
We were keen to creatively inspire brides- and grooms-to-be and to give a taster for our Boutique Wedding Fair which will be taking place at The Mandolay Hotel on 28th January 2018 where there will be inspiration stations, more than 40 wedding suppliers, a fashion show and much more. We hope the shoot has given couples ideas on how they could have a stunning boutique celebration at The Mandolay Hotel.
