The rules on weddings and lockdown restrictions

31 Jul 2020

Due to get married? What can and can't you do at the moment?

The Prime Minister has today announced a halt on lockdown easing which would have seen small wedding receptions of up to 30 guests be allowed from tomorrow, August 1. This means wedding receptions are on hold again until at least August 15.

The current rules on weddings are:

  • Wedding ceremonies or civil partnerships for up to 30 people have been able to take place from July 4, when there is space to follow the social distancing rules of at least one metre between different households

  • Ceremonies should be kept as short as possible

  • No food or drink should be consumed unless necessary for the marriage solemnisation

  • Group singing and playing of instruments should be avoided

  • Hands should be washed before and after the exchanging of rings
