Wedding inspiration from the party capital – Las Vegas

Holly Moore, managing director of Cheshire-based events company Make Events has recently returned from Las Vegas, where she attended one of the leading trade shows for the events industry worldwide; Event Solutions (www.event-solutions.com). One of her aims was to come back with some inspiration for our weddings right here in the UK. Here she talks about what was on show, what the USA does differently and what she believes we may be seeing over here.

“I recently had one of the best four days of my professional life at the Event Solutions conference in Las Vegas. I wanted to look further afield for some ideas and inspiration for our British weddings. The USA was the obvious place to start with its love of breath taking extravagant weddings and the huge variation of suppliers.

“The wedding décor was a key area that came hitting home to me. The Americans like a theme, one that is unique to their personalities. They want to put a personal stamp on their wedding and send guests away with the feeling that it truly reflected them. And, they like knowing that they won’t go to a replica wedding the following month.

“During the event, I met David Tutera, an author and world famous wedding planner who also has a hit primetime show in the USA, “My Fair Wedding”. He was on hand to judge a hard fought competition for the Best Table set-ups where event designers went head to head to win the accolade of Tablescape Winner 2014. Was it not just the usual chair covers to match the colour scheme and a central floral piece, you may ask? In the US it is most definitely not.

“The winning table setting was entitled “The Dark Side of Snow White”. As you’ll see in the pictures the setting included, mirrors, the infamous apple and a rather dark theme that could add real drama to your day.

“It appears that the trend in the US is for your wedding to feel like a luxury restaurant, club or outdoor beach venue, with a mix of luxurious linens, different styles of furniture and little thoughts and touches through the journey of the wedding that encompass the couple’s personality and journey together. We can of course emulate this here; we may not want it to be as big, but there is nothing to stop us Brits putting our own personality stamp onto our big day.

“Linens on display were of an unbelievable quality and variety and often used floor to ceiling to dress a room. Tables of varying shapes in a room, not just circular; there was a mix of long tables and small or even those in a large cross shape, so everyone is sat together. And if couples are opting for a marquee it appears that oblong is no longer cutting it, as they are choosing round, hexagonal or tepee style over the traditional.

“Lighting as they said is the “best bang for your dollars” it’s hard to explain to couples how essential lighting is and how key it is to creating an atmosphere. What I loved in particular was the use of LED flooring and lighting with an art deco style theme using rich ruby red velvets with a white LED floor.

“I saw the growing trend of a ‘Man Cave’ and a ‘Babe Cave’ an area off from the main wedding where girls can get their make-up touched up, hair restyled or just chill with their girlfriends and the men can may be have a game of cards, a whisky or get a cigar.

“The trip really was a great investment for my business. Brides in the USA are not scared to ask their venue or wedding planner to do something different. And why not? You should be pushing your wedding planner or designer to be creative in every element of your wedding and not just in recommending suppliers ad excepting their standard offering.”
