Follow this expert advice when it comes to your wedding guest outfit
Have you been invited to a wedding in 2022 and have no idea what to wear? The fashion experts at Clarks have analysed search volume data to reveal the most sought after colours for wedding guests this year and beyond. Here is how the colours rank since January 2021:
- Blue wedding outfits: 5,300+ searches per month
- Black wedding outfits: 4,700+ searches per month
- Pink wedding outfits: 4,600+ searches per month
- Red wedding outfits: 3,300+ searches per month
- Green wedding outfits: 1,700+ searches per month
It is surprising to see black wedding outfits rank so highly, given the less than celebratory connotations the colour evokes.
Lindsay Punch of Lindsay Punch Styling says: "Times have changed and it has become more acceptable to wear black to weddings. The key with black is to keep it elegant and sophisticated, so avoid anything too revealing or clingy. If you are worried that an all-black outfit is too harsh for the occasion, embroidered flowers on a black base can look just as feminine as a lighter and softer colour."
Lindsay continues: "Glitzy accessories or metallic shoes can add glamour and elevate the simplest of black dresses. For more of a contrast to a black outfit, opt for bold and bright shoes and accessories such as red, hot pink or cobalt blue for a contemporary look."
Elaborating on footwear for wedding outfits in other colours, Lindsay advises: "You can't go wrong with a nude shoe. Opt for a pinky nude if your outfit is a cooler colour (has a blue undertone) or a camel nude if your outfit is a warmer colour (yellow undertone).

"Navy is the most universally flattering colour and complements any colour in the colour wheel, so for a blue outfit you can go for something simple and neutral or something bright and bold, such as red or pink. Blue also sits perfectly with any metallic colour so you can go for gold or silver."
"If your outfit is pink, you can keep it soft, feminine and romantic with silver, rose gold or nude shoes. For a stronger contrast, try black, navy or white. Burgundy is also a perfect pairing with pink, moving away from the classic neutrals."
Lindsay also highlights the trend for deep hues and jewel colours in velvet, such as burgundy or emerald, for a sophisticated and elegant edge to your outfit. "One of my favourite colour combinations is black and navy," she says. "It's a real archaic rule to avoid this pairing, but it can be one of the chicest colour combinations when it's kept nice and simple."
