Wedding dresses to suit your shape

Dress designer Charlotte Balbier gives brides the low down on what types of wedding dress will suit your style

What type of wedding dress shape is most flattering to a pear shape?

A dropped waistline or strapless ball-gown will cover the bottom half of a bride who is a pear-shape and put more emphasis on the top.  A princess ball-gown will balance out a torso and bust with this body shape, the classic ‘A’ line also looks beautiful.  It is best to steer clear of Mermaid or trumpet gowns that draw attention to your lower half.  The best dress suitable from the Charlotte Balbier collection is the ‘Gracie’ gown.

What type of wedding dress shape is most flattering to an apple-shape?

For an apple shape, a dress that cinches in at the smallest point on the waist-line like the Charlotte Balbier ‘Lily Mae’ dress (below) would look stunning.

Dresses that flare out into a gradual A shape are good for apple shapes.  A bride should opt for a bodice with a lot of texture to it and think about ruche and lace detail to camouflage and create a corset like event.  A deep V-neck will be slenderizing like the ‘Mabel’ (below).

What type of wedding dress shape is most flattering to an hourglass shape?

With a fantastic figure like this, most hour-glass figures can carry off most styles. I’d advise showing off your figure and silhouette in a soft fishtail fitting gown.  The best Charlotte Balbier dress from the collection is the ‘Aubrey’ (below).  A high pair of heels can help balance out an hourglass shape to perfection.

What type of wedding dress shape is most flattering to a boyish shape?

An athletic figure is more straight than curvy so I’d suggest the Charlotte Balbier ‘Etienne’ gown (below) for this shape.

With this kind of figure it is all about creating the illusion of curves.  A boyish figure can rock a Princess-cut fuller skirt as it will make the most of a slender frame and brings out the fun or equally a slim line gown.  A big chunky piece of jewellery might be good as a focus and to add another dimension and shape to a boyish figure. Adding in a belt or sash also gives the allusion of a curve as seen on style ‘Petal’ (below).

What type of wedding dress shape is most flattering to a cornet shape?

A cornet body shape typically consists of broad shoulders and a small bust. The ladies hips are petite and they are usually lucky to have a slim waist with long-legs.  These bodies are blessed with an athletic build for the catwalk.  It is also known as a ‘triangle shape’ figure as well as a cornet.  The best wedding dress shape is the Charlotte Balbier ‘Abbie’ wedding dress.

This will downplay a cornet’s hips and the fullness of an A-line gown will create the illusion that the upper body is smaller than what it is.
