We found Grays Court in October 2010, when it was simply a tearoom but were blown away by their afternoon tea. When we decided to have a civil partnership we wanted a simple venue, which reflected us as a couple and cake is a crucial part of our relationship! Luckily, they had just started hosting weddings and were in the process of transforming into a boutique hotel catering predominantly for weddings.

We thought about having a simple, understated day and just buying pretty dresses on the high street. But after a few months we decided to break away from gay stereotypes and have two ‘white’ dresses. Firstly, because we wanted to feel like brides and, secondly because we both feared a guest might rock up wearing the same dress! We decided that we were breaking enough traditions already, so why not choose our dresses together!

Neither of us slept very well the night before, so the morning began rather later than anticipated. Luckily we had photographer, come wedding coordinator and knight in shining armour, Jim Poyner who made everything better. He quite literally made tea, met guests, helped Best Women put contact lenses in, set up amplifiers and charmed the socks off all of our guests. Oh, and took the best photographs money could buy at the same time.

Samantha walked into the ceremony first with her dad, followed closely by me and my dad. Our best friends Claire and Andy were singing and playing one of our favourite songs, ‘Better Together’ by Jack Johnson. The ceremony was packed with personal touches. Because it was a civil partnership we were able to write more of the ceremony ourselves.

We didn’t really have a wedding breakfast. We stuck to our own tradition and had afternoon tea before the meal. The speeches were amazing. My brother did an amazing job of being Master of Ceremonies and once again, against tradition, we both made speeches.

We held our evening reception at the Biltmore, as it seemed wrong to turn a historic house into a disco. This was one of the best decisions we made, because the horse and cart ride reinvigorated the whole atmosphere of our day.
