Traditional with a modern twist: The wedding of Thomas and Stephanie Glasby

The wedding of Thomas and Stephanie Glasby at  St Stephen’s Church, Robin Hoods Bay, followed by a reception at Raithwaite Hall

Photography: Ryan Browne

On the day of our wedding I felt very calm. Of course, it’s natural to have some nerves, mine hit just as we arrived at the church, but there was a lot of excitement mixed into them as well.

The ceremony was a traditional Church of England service performed at St Stephen’s Church in Robin Hoods Bay, by our close family friend Reverand Graham Taylor. It was quite an emotionally charged service, and we could hear the sobs behind us all the way through.

Our reception was held at Raithwaite Hall, a venue which wasn’t even built when we booked it! After a mix up with a previous venue we had a tour of the build site at Raithwaite. I’d known the grounds as a child and we both fell in love with the gorgeous scenery instantly.

Tom made sure his views were heard during the planning. He wanted blue as the main colour for bridesmaids dresses and suits so we decided on navy. He also helped to choose the flowers. In fact, I think the flowers were pivotal in showing the theme of our day. They were bright and colourful and gave the impression of fun while still being romantic. We also used candles down the aisle of the church, a theme we carried onto the tables in our reception venue.

My dress was unconventional in colour, silvery with a hint of grey but traditional in its style.

Because out photographer had a reportage style, it meant we weren’t spending that much time posing for photographs and could spend time talking to our guests. We also really got to relax and enjoy the flow of the day.

Tom kept his speech short and sweet, then mum made one which was kind and moving before Tom’s best man took it upon himself to make the funniest speech of the day. The humour was light but relevant to us – the perfect combination!

At the evening reception we had an amazing swing band that really got the party going and I cried the entire way through out first dance!
