The Royal Mint issues 2018 Wedding Silver Sixpence

16 Jan 2018

To commemorate the long-standing tradition of placing a lucky Silver Sixpence in the bride's shoe, The Royal Mint has unveiled a special gift for those marrying this year

Many of us will have heard of the wedding rhyme 'Something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue,' but did you know that it should continue '…and a silver sixpence in her shoe'?

The silver sixpence has always been used as a lucky charm to be gifted to the bride on her wedding morning and it is traditionally the task of the bride's father to place the sixpence in her shoe.

For those getting married this year, The Royal Mint has released a 2018 dated Wedding Silver Sixpence which comes with a card to be completed by the gifter.

Available for £15 from The Royal Mint’s website,, the 2018 Wedding Silver Sixpence will be a undoubtedly prove popular with family members and friends who wish to mark the couple's wedding year in a traditional and heartfelt way.
