The one - a real wedding find

Jamie Cavanagh and Kathryn Bullen

Where: Ceremony at St Mary’s RC Church, Chorley, Lancashire followed by reception at Samlesbury Hall, Preston, Lancashire

Photography: Ashton Photography

I had grown up in the Parish of St Mary’s Church in Chorley and attended Mass there every week so it was an obvious choice. We stumbled across Samlesbury Hall by accident one day. We drove past it and noticed there was a wedding on at the time. We sneakily drove up the drive and knew straight away that it was the right place for our reception.

I had tried on loads of dresses in many shops in Chorley and knew what suited me but hadn’t found one that was exactly what I wanted. I spent ages online looking through all the dress designer’s websites and only found one that had everything that I wanted. Alison Cornwall from Brides Gallery in Eccleston kindly ordered it in for me to try on and it was perfect. It was by Ronald Joyce, was lacy but summery at the same time, and was so comfy to wear. I didn’t want to take it off!

Jamie picked the menswear and did a very good job. They wore grey waistcoats which fit in well with the purple colour scheme and the frockcoats were just a little bit different to traditional tails. My sister Helen Bullen and Jamie’s sister Mandy Cavanagh were my bridesmaids. They looked lovely in their purple floor length dresses on the day.

Our colour scheme was bright purple and silver – I wanted colours that would stand out in Samlesbury Hall and purple is my favourite colour. The wedding was a real family occasion as the main wedding party was made up of our immediate families. Everyone played their part in making the day so special for all of us. Catherine Allton from Sapphire Wedding Cards in Chorley designed all my stationery according to some very detailed specifications. She did a wonderful job and I was very pleased with how it all looked. Five Acres florist in Eccleston prepared some wonderful bouquets for me and my bridesmaids and her flower arrangements filled the church on the day. Our cake was a present from my great auntie and uncle who used to run a bakery. It was a rich chocolate flavour, which looked lovely and tasted even better.

On the morning I was excited but nervous. I soon relaxed once my hair and makeup were done and our photographer Steph Ashton arrived to start taking the photos. I loved walking down the aisle. It was the part of the day that I had thought about the most beforehand and it definitely lived up to expectations. I couldn’t stop smiling! Jamie turned round to look at me and I’ll always remember the smile on his face when he saw me. The ceremony was a traditional church ceremony like I had always wanted, with the organ, choir, hymns and church bells. It was sincere but personal with some lovely touches.

We couldn’t have asked for better photographers. Steve and Steph from Ashton photography were always there in the background snapping away but were so unobtrusive that most of the time you didn’t realise they were there. Because of that we have so many candid photos that have captured the story of the whole day.

After the meal our guests could play on casino tables or listen to ghost stories about Samlesbury Hall. As Samlesbury Hall doesn’t have hotel rooms we made sure there was plenty of entertainment at all times so our guests didn’t get bored.

Our first dance was Paradise by Coldplay. We both love the song and it is such a happy song that lots of couples joined in and were singing along. Our DJ from Dancefloor Couture then did an excellent job of making sure there were lots of people on the dancefloor all night.
