A new study by SpaSeekers has ranked 66 cities around the world to reveal how romantic they are.  An algorithm was created to score each city out of 50 based on five data sets.

Jason Goldberg, founder of SpaSeekers says: “Finding the right city break for romance can be tricky, so we conducted a study taking a number of factors into consideration to rank worldwide cities.”

The five data points used to generate The Worldwide Romantic Index were:

  • How many people in the city express romantic sentiment on social media
  • How sexually active the adult population in each city is, based on a study of 450,000 adults by Lazeeva
  • LGBT dating scene, based on study by Nestpick
  • The most popular city for proposals - based on 118,000 social media posts with #engaged, #heproposed and #isaidyes
  • Marriage rates in each city

The data revealed that New York is the world’s most romantic city with an overall score of 46.4 out of 50. London came second in the rankings followed closely by Los Angeles and Paris.

3,421 engagements took place in the Big Apple in the last six months making it the most likely destination worldwide for a proposal this Valentine’s Day. It also came top as the best city for LGBT dating.

In second place overall, London was also ranked the fourth most sexually active city. Despite ranking 44th in marriage rates, 1,813 London proposal posts were shared in the last six months. To date, more than 1.7 million Instagram posts with #isaidyes have been shared worldwide.

“Valentine’s Day may be a time where sparks fly but romance should be enjoyed throughout the year,” says Jason. “While a holiday in the Big Apple may be the adventure of a lifetime, you can enjoy just as much quality time together at a spa break closer to home.”

The study also found that Paris was the most sexually active city in the world, followed by Los Angeles and Ibiza town. Click here to see the full index.
