Why Sri Lanka might be the honeymoon destination for you

Sri Lanka is one of the most beautiful islands in Asia. All you need to enjoy this magical honeymoon spot is a visa.
Sri Lanka is one of those countries that flies under the radar when planning a honeymoon in Asia. In fact, many people mistakenly believe the country actually lies in Africa. Yet this little island nation is without a doubt one of the most visually spectacular places in Asia, and as such has become increasingly popular for leisure trips. In this article, we’ll explain why.
Why Sri Lanka?
While it is quickly rising in popularity as a honeymoon destination, Sri Lanka is still very much unspoilt. Countless articles and guides have been written about the more popular honeymoon spots in the world, and while they certainly offer plenty in their own right, the large crowds can be off-putting to some. In that regard, Sri Lanka still offers that old feeling of wonder, of sharing that unique trip with your partner. There are far less crowds trying to take pictures at every corner, or filling up restaurants and beaches.
The weather is another major plus. While some countries in South and Southeast Asia can have scorching temperatures approaching 40 degrees Celsius, Sri Lanka is far more manageable in that regard, with temperatures hovering between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius. This means you can go out at any time of day without having to worry too much about the heat. This makes planning your activities a lot easier.
What does Sri Lanka offer?
Sri Lanka is an island with seemingly endless amounts to offer. On the west coast, you can relax at Negombo’s beautiful beaches, which have not yet been spoiled by excessive tourism. Negombo is less than an hour’s drive from Colombo, making it a very accessible location for first-time travellers to Sri Lanka. In Negombo you can also find cultural and historical things to do: visit the crowded fish market if you really want to mingle with the locals, or go to the sprawling Munneswaram temple complex, an important Hindu temple which dates from 1000 CE, to immerse yourselves in history.
Kandy is another popular choice for honeymooners. Its venerated history as the seat of Sri Lanka’s last king appeals to the imagination of newlyweds. While Kandy has plenty to offer locally, what it is most famous for is the awe-inspiring train ride from Kandy to Ella, regularly touted as one of the most scenic routes in the world. You’ll pass lush forests, hills, crystal-blue lakes and misty waterfalls, all while freely being able to breathe in the fresh outside air.
In both Kandy and Ella, you can visit tea plantations to finally see where your beloved cup of green tea comes from. Are you instead the type that enjoys the splash of water? Sri Lanka offers a wide variety of water-related activities, such as canoeing at Bentota or windsurfing at Arugam Bay. At Kalpitiya, in the north-west of Sri Lanka, you can spot dolphins happily frolicking around.
In short, Sri Lanka has something for everyone, which is one of the main reasons it has started attracting more and more honeymooners.
Travelling to Sri Lanka: getting your visa
In addition to planning out what to do and sights to see in Sri Lanka, couples who plan to have their honeymoon in Sri Lanka are required to also apply for a Sri Lanka visa. This visa is mandatory for foreign travellers. Without it, you won’t be allowed to enter the country. Thankfully, the Sri Lanka visa can be applied for online without needing to go to the embassy or anything. Applying generally only takes about five minutes, after which you receive the visas by e-mail in the next few days.
The Sri Lanka visa is valid for 30 days. In other words, more than enough for a proper honeymoon. If by chance you don’t want to leave after the first 30 days, the visa can be extended by an extra 60 days in Sri Lanka. You wouldn’t be the first to lose their hearts to this magical island.
