Something blue: The wedding of Julian Ollive and Abbigail Wright

Finding the perfect shoes led to the colour scheme at Julian and Abbigail’s wedding at Byland Abbey

We wanted to find a location close to where I grew up in the North Yorkshire countryside and The Abbey Inn at Byland had a perfect mix of intimacy and rustic charm for the ceremony, while being impressive. We wanted a vintage feel and the venue lent itself to this look perfectly.

I always knew I’d like a 1950s-style dress and birdcage veil. I’m quite clumsy and could imagine tripping up on a full-length gown with train. I actually chose my shoes before the dress and their blue colour ended up informing the colours of my other accessories and the men’s ties. Julian had his suit tailored with blue lining and stitching to match. He’s a big Brighton Hove Albion supporter so the colour tied in with his team’s colours.

We decorated the marquee with bunting and strings of old family photos and I collected hundreds of items of vintage china from charity shops to use as place settings. My dad Paul, made a six-foot tall model of the Empire State Building for people to post their cards to us, as our honeymoon was to New York. Julian’s brother Matthew, designed the invitations and wedding programmes and Julian and his mum Janet, arranged all the flowers.

My uncle, Ray Flanagan, drove me and my dad to the venue in a tiny vintage car, (called Norman) lent to us by The Fauconberg Arms. My brother Alex, wrote a song and performed this during the ceremony and his folk band, The Beulah Band, played a quirky version of the wedding march as we walked up the aisle.

The Durham Ox created a wonderful wedding breakfast including a pudding made with our own home-grown rhubarb. We organised a cake table, with some guests contributing to what we named The Great Wedding Bake Off – Julian’s 83-year-old nanny, Dora, even brought her best treacle tart all the way from East Sussex!

Instead of favours we gave everyone a raffle ticket and had fun after the speeches pulling out the winning numbers.

We both work in theatre so there were high expectations for our first dance. We wanted to perform something fun and memorable so a few of us learnt Michael Jackson’s Thriller. We went all out with zombie choreography and our family and friends loved it. I sing in a band with other staff from York Theatre Royal and we played to finish the evening and had everyone singing along and dancing.
