Settle's Falcon Manor Hotel welcomes back first married couple
07 Sep 2016
The first couple to get married at Settle's Falcon Manor Hotel recently returned to the venue to celebrate their 21st anniversary and relive their wedding day
Wed on Wednesday, 23rd August 1995, John and Joanne Brennand hold their wedding venue close to their hearts because they were the first to marry there.
To celebrate their 21st anniversary this year, the couple decided to return to their venue –Settle's Falcon Manor Hotel in the Yorkshire Dales – and remember their special day, which was shared with 70 guests. To mark the occasion, John and Joanne stayed in the Rafters Suite and enjoyed a celebratory dinner.
Falcon Manor's marketing manager, Heidi Kettle, said: "We were delighted to help John and Joanne celebrate their anniversary. It's always nice to see our brides and grooms after their weddings and having the first couple back as guests was really special."
While certain features remain, the hotel now looks very different to how John and Joanne remembered it, having undergone a full refurbishment in recent years. Joanne commented: "Falcon Manor was a beautiful place to get married in 1995 and is even more stunning now it's had such an amazing facelift."
Not only were John and Joanne the first to wed at the hotel, but they also believe they were the second couple in North Yorkshire to take advantage of a change in the law at the time. Brought about by the Marriage Act 1994, the change allowed marriages to be solemnized in certain 'approved premises'. Joanne said: "Getting married at the venue and not having to travel to our wedding breakfast was such a novelty at the time, and everyone just loved everything being under one roof."
Marrying in a hotel or other approved venue is now the most common form of wedding ceremony in England and Wales with around 149,000 couples tying the knot in such premises each year.
