After weeks of rumours about their engagement, it has been confirmed that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are due to wed in 2018. Harry, who is fifth in line to the throne, has been dating 36-year-old actress Meghan since summer 2016, and the couple made their first public appearance as a couple in September at the Invictus Games.

A statement issued by Clarence House said: "His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince Harry to Ms Meghan Markle. The wedding will take place in Spring 2018. Further details about the wedding day will be announced in due course. His Royal Highness and Ms Markle became engaged in London earlier this month. Prince Harry has informed Her Majesty The Queen and other close members of his family. Prince Harry has also sought and received the blessing of Ms Markle's parents. The couple will live in Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace.”

Meghan, who is from Los Angeles, was recently living in Canada to film the hit TV show Suits but has made the move to London this month. As well as acting in television and film, she is also a humanitarian; she was named the UN Women's Advocate for Political Participation and Leadership in 2015 and is a global ambassador for World Vision. In response to the news of her engagement, her parents Thomas Markle and Doria Ragland said: “We are incredibly happy for Meghan and Harry. Our daughter has always been a kind and loving person. To see her union with Harry, who shares the same qualities, is a source of great joy for us as parents. We wish them a lifetime of happiness and are very excited for their future together.”

Prince Harry has already introduced Meghan to his grandmother the Queen, when they met for tea at Buckingham Palace in October. Royal protocol dictated that he had to ask the Queen for her permission before proposing, and she and the Duke of Edinburgh have stated that they are “delighted for the couple and wish them every happiness.”

Meghan has also met The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Of their engagement, the prince and his wife said: “We are very excited for Harry and Meghan. It has been wonderful getting to know Meghan and to see how happy she and Harry are together.”
