Our fairytale

Once upon a time James and Gemma were married on a romantic, traditional white wedding day

We knew that we wanted a really traditional and fairytale white wedding since we are both from Catholic backgrounds. St Thomas’s in Fairford is such a pretty church with just enough space to fit our 85 guests.

For the reception, we wanted somewhere modern that would make for gorgeous photographs and so, even though we live in Wiltshire, the Four Pillars Hotel, in Gloucestershire, surrounded by stunning lakes, was number one choice. Once those decisions were made, everything else just fell into place, thanks to plenty of visits to wedding fairs.

I was surprisingly calm when I woke up on the morning, but once the wedding cars arrived outside the house, I have never known nerves like it. I was shaking like a leaf at the top of the aisle. It was only when I got to clasp James’s hand that I started to relax.

We arrived at the reception to find our guests enjoying champagne on the balcony with the background noise of our jazz band playing nearby. Our colour theme was light blue – we had light blue petals scattered on tables, balloons, gorgeous tall vases filled with blue hydrangeas and delphiniums, tealights, a white backdrop to the top table and white chair covers with blue sashes.

We had a rugby theme throughout the day with each table being named after a rugby club, which allowed us to exploit the fact that I’m Welsh and James is English. Even our cake toppers had the bride in a Welsh rugby shirt and the groom in an English one.
