Laura Hughes and Bradley Middleton married at GreenAcres Colney in Norwich on April 26, 2019. The ceremony was very personal to the couple who have been together since 2010. Laura and Brad have travelled the world together but in 2014 they received news that changed everything.
Laura was diagnosed with primary breast cancer after finding a lump in her left breast while on holiday in Australia. Back in the UK, she had a mastectomy, an extensive course of radiotherapy and hormone treatment which ended in May 2015. A self-employed hairstylist at the time, chemotherapy appointments and the risk of infection meant that Laura had to stop working.
After throwing a ‘Fifty Shades of Pink’ party to celebrate, Laura signed up to trek across Iceland in 2016 to raise funds for the breast cancer charity Coppafeel. While training, she began to feel a pain in her shoulder. During this time, her mum Helen Hughes also passed away. “We were organising a funeral, so I wasn’t thinking about my shoulder,” she says.
Returning from Iceland, Laura was again referred to hospital and in October 2016 she was told that the cancer had spread to her humorous, spine and pelvis.
“I was thrown back into treatment and our lives were thrown into turmoil again,” she remembers; “At the moment I’m stable but they will never get rid of it. It is incurable.” Throughout everything, Brad stuck by Laura and supported her endlessly.
After a romantic and intimate proposal in Corsica in August 2018, Brad and Laura quickly got started on wedding planning. With a date set, the couple had something to look forward to together.
A friend in a secondary breast cancer support group mentioned The Wedding Wishing Well Foundation to Laura. She had already arranged the venue, photographer, videographer and had her dress at this point but Laura got in touch with the charity to see if they could help.
Founder Naomi Thomas quickly got to work. Pictures and Pinterest boards went between Naomi and Laura who talked at length about the bride and groom’s vision for the day. Naomi and her husband Graham had never planned a wedding in Norwich or even seen the venue – nevertheless, they planned the day to perfection.
During the ceremony, Laura’s sisters Hannah, Martha and Grace Hughes read a poem together. Oa Hackett, a friend of the bride’s and founder of the charity Little Lifts, read a piece written by Laura about her journey with Brad. “We didn’t want cancer to take over the day but we felt it needed a bit of a place,” says Laura.
The couple then celebrated with 75 guests at Glebe Farm Barn. “We were so overwhelmed by all the little touches,” says Laura; “Without even having seen the venue before Naomi pulled it all together.”
Caterers Florentina Events served antipasti and fish and chips in keeping with the bride and groom’s vision for their rustic celebration. Florists Constance Rose incorporated the bride’s favourite flowers throughout displays and Celebration Wedding Cars and Events provided a vintage car for the couple’s journey from the ceremony to reception.
Victoria Marquees donated oversized balloons, Belles and Beaus Wedding Styling dressed the venue and Epic Event Hire added a magical sparkle with festoon lighting. Guests played Cosy Tea Party’s garden games and Toastmaster Nigel kept everything running to schedule. Coley Caricaturist and magician Nick Twist were a surprise for the bride and groom arranged by Naomi and her husband Graham.
The wedding was followed by a barbecue with friends and family at Glebe Farm Barn the next day, before the newlyweds flew off to the Maldives for their honeymoon.
Laura raises awareness for several charities and documents her journey through her social media platforms through the handle Bald, Boobless and Beautiful. “If I can get one person to check their boobs or go to hospital to get something checked out, that’s amazing – that’s why I do it,” she says.
