A best man has secured the title of Britain’s favourite wedding speech following a nationwide vote for the QHotels Wedding Speech Awards 2017. Craig Porretta, from Newcastle, was best man at his friend Dean Richardson’s wedding. He entertained the guests with his ‘Fresh Prince of Bel Air’ inspired rap, which detailed the love story between the groom and best man.

QHotels, which is managed by Redefine|BDL Hotels (RBH), loved Craig’s entry. What began as a traditional best man’s speech quickly turned into a musical spectacle describing the ‘bromance’ between the groom and his best friend. The 15-minute speech even featured a surprise performance from the groom’s mother, and Craig also made a music video for guests to watch after the big day.

The creative speech received the most votes from the shortlisted entries, winning the public vote in QHotels’ 2017 Wedding Speech Awards. Craig said: “The reaction to my speech on the day was already something special, but being able to say I gave my best friend and his beautiful wife an award winning speech is priceless.”

His top tip to other best men is to play on their bromance with the groom. “If the bromance is real, then play on it. Remember to think of everybody in the room and keep away from anything offensive. Be yourself, be original and, finally get a tripod and record yourself practicing over and over again.”

Now in its third year, the awards have seen many dramatic and creative entries; however, there are still some people who prefer to stick to tradition when it comes to speeches.

John Stuart, chief operations officer at Redefine|BDL Hotels, said: “Musical performances are continuing to grow in popularity – especially among best men who enjoy playing up the laughs and even dressing up for their big moment. The groom’s mother even made a surprise musical debut in the winning speech this year.

“Brides are also increasingly taking to the microphone to share their thanks and generate some laughs. One thing all the speeches had in common, however they were delivered, was their joy for the happy couple.”

Craig’s winning speech has earned him an overnight stay, with dinner, for two people at one of the group’s four-star venues.
