While a bride’s dress is an important aspect of the wedding day, so too, is the mother’s. Here, three mothers show us how they found their outfit ahead of the big day.

“I really wanted Keanu and Lorna to be involved in choosing my dress for their wedding. Unfortunately, due to the lockdown restrictions at that time, we found it hard to meet up to go shopping together in person. So instead, we searched online and sent each other pictures of dresses we liked. It was extremely important to me that my outfit looked pretty, flattered my figure and reflected my personality as well as being comfortable to wear.

“The dress I chose was one that Keanu had suggested, a mint floral chiffon frill dress from Roman. I loved this dress as soon as I saw it. The pastel colours and pretty floral print appealed to me, along with the flattering V-neckline. My favourite element of the dress was that it was a floaty with a hanky hemline, which felt free-spirited yet still suitable for a formal occasion. The shades of blue in my outfit complemented the colours of the bridal party.

“To finish the look, I wore a navy scuba jacket from Kaleidoscope and accessorised with a navy fascinator, and matching handbag and shoes.”

“I found my outfit after a long and stressful search. This was mainly due to having to shop online because of the pandemic. I bought my outfit from The Wedding Shop in Colchester when the shops were able to open again. It was a Linea Raffaelli suit.

“The colours and style were perfect and complemented the rest of the bridal party. My favourite elements of the outfit were the style and colour of the jacket, and how it contrasted with the dress colour. I loved the different colours in the dress and its texture.

“Once the main outfit was chosen, the accessories were not that difficult to match. I found my fascinator, shoes and handbag in high street stores. On the day, I was so comfortable and felt a million dollars in my outfit. I loved every single moment of my daughter's special day.”

Karen Walklett – Mother of the bride

Karen Walklett found her stylish gown at the National Wedding Show in London. "I visited the shop, Nigel Rayment, in London a few days after and tried it on,” says Karen. “It was my first designer dress and I managed to get it for half price. This was almost two years before my daughter's wedding, but I knew I needed to have it. I found my hat on sale at Debenhams and my shoes were a bargain from TK Maxx.”

Karen’s petite figure made it difficult to find a dress that fitted her perfectly. “I am very small, so it is hard to find a dress that fits well. I really liked the shape and cut of the dress when I tried it on. I also liked the style of the dress and the subtle, but beautiful details on it. The colour was lovely.”

“I thought it was a very different style to your typical mother of the bride dress, but it was very me. I loved wearing it.”
