Because we live in Scotland and our families are spread out we loved the idea of a weekend wedding venue. I came across Middleton Lodge on the internet and when we went to visit we just fell in love with the cosy, family home impression.

I think I probably tried on about 80 wedding dresses. As soon as I’d tried on a lace with delicate tulle overlay La Sposa dress one of my bridesmaids thought it was the one, but it took me another two months to decide!

We didn’t have a specific colour or theme in mind to begin with. I knew I wanted peonies because they are my favourite flower and our florist suggested other summer country garden flowers, so a theme developed from there.

The day before the wedding the rain was pouring down and as we set up decorations in the marquee, I thought it was going to take off because the wind was so strong! It was lovely to have our family and bridal party all staying there the night before, particularly as so many had travelled from a distance.

After a relaxed breakfast our hair and make-up was done. I wanted fresh flowers in my hair as it’s a Swiss tradition and I had a full length veil.

I arrived at the church and remember looking down the aisle and seeing Richard smiling back at me looking gorgeous in his charcoal grey tails. The only time I nearly cried was as I caught my friend’s eye as she completed her reading.

I was worried about the speeches. My family is a bit of a melting pot of nationalities so the British speech tradition isn’t something my dad is used to and English isn’t his first language. However, he is an experienced public speaker and I never should have doubted him, or his speech.

We didn’t have any additional guests arriving in the evening so following the end of the marquee reception at midnight, those of us who were still going strong descended into the Cellar Bar for a wedding after party.
