Featuring two distinctive bridal styles, this winter wonderland shoot delivers contemporary luxe and rustic elegance
Held at Deer Park Country House in Honiton, Devon, this winter wonderland shoot was organised and styled by Amber Leach at Liberty Pearl Photography - enabling a small group of photographers to expand their winter portfolio. Here, Amber tells us more about how the shoot was put together.
Tell us more about the venue and why it was chosen.
Deer Park Country House Hotel is a beautiful boutique hotel and 18th century Georgian mansion with 80 acres of glorious grounds, a pretty Italian garden and tree house. It is the epitome of a quintessentially English country house. I have always wanted to build my autumn and winter wedding portfolio and when the venue contacted me to ask me whether I would like to conduct a winter shoot in their beautiful hotel I couldn’t resist.
What was the theme of the shoot?
This shoot is a combination of a luxury winter wonderland with a hint of silver, fluffy cotton candy, and geode crystals. All ths combined with a warm and relaxed autumn wonderland with a hint of rustic silver, grey and an abundance of autumn green florals.
I absolutely love simple elegantly styled weddings with a hint of the unconventional, so we went for a luxe winter wonderland theme with a collection of stunning contemporary bridal gowns from Ellis Bridals 2017 collection. We also chose a muted silver sequin dress from Phase Eight to inspire brides who want something different.
Talk us through the details of the shoot.
Bloom and Flourish, the florist, is always very creative and loves using local and seasonal plants for her floral creations. The inspiration for the flowers was as follows: “The cone shaped small bouquet I thought of being held by the Snow Queen in the Narnia series. The flower crown and bouquet with hydrangeas are celebrating the colours and wildness of the English Autumn.”
Jenny from Edible Essence has always wanted to design and make a geode cake so when she approached me with her design I couldn’t wait to see it come to life. Jenny said: “My inspiration for the cake and dessert table was inspired by the beautiful agate and geode themed bridal stationery which ties in with the winter silver wedding. I have always wanted to make marble macarons which tied in with the theme using earthy natural rock elements."
We commissioned the creative team at Hip Hip Hooray to create a geode and agate collection of wedding stationery to tie in with the cake design from Edible Essence, using the white, grey and silver colour scheme, and the results are just superb. The designs are so beautiful, elegant and unique and are printed on their luxury pearlescent card.
Shoes are very important to brides, and to me they add so much to any wedding dress, so I used the beautiful new collection from Emmy London. Emmy London is a luxury shoe and accessories brand that encompasses undeniable beauty, bespoke craftsmanship and the quintessentially British style. From beautiful wedding shoes to chic courts and show-stopping party shoes the brand epitomises feminine, elegant and sublimely comfortable design.
Decor and props
We wanted to inject some fun into the shoot so we hired beautiful velvet chairs and a giant silver picture frame from The Prop Factory, which were perfect for the shoot. The Prop Factory supplies rustic decoration, candelabras, fairground games, gramophones and a wide range of vintage accessories and props for weddings. The snow machine from Pro Sound And Light was just awesome and I would recommend it for any winter wedding, it was so much fun for the photographers and the models. To complement the stationery and cake designs and to decorate the dinner table set up we scattered beautiful geode crystals from Phoenix Wings Crystals.
How did you tie the hair and make-up together?
We wanted the hair and make-up to look natural and very beautiful. Genevieve, the make-up artist, enhanced the models' own natural beauty effortlessly and the girls looked radiant all day long. Katie looked great with a touch of smokey-eyed glamour and Abigail fashioned a more natural pared down look.
Kyrelle from Devon Wedding Hair specialises in alternative bohemian weddings and festival hair. The models have very different hair so Abigail’s short hair was put up to make a feature of her bridal accessory headband from The Lucky Sixpence, and Katie’s beautiful long hair was transformed into a trendy festival-style loose plait.
Tell us about the groom's look.
We wanted the groom to be dressed in a modern slim fit suit in grey that was very understated and Jonathan Hawkes had the perfect selection of suits to choose from.
