Ideas for your wedding entertainment from guests’ arrival to them going home

Wedding entertainment isn't just for the evening - your wedding day is full of opportunities to surprise, amaze and delight your guests with live entertainment. Providing entertainment also helps smooth over the inevitable 'gaps' and pauses in your wedding day, so that your guests won't even notice the photos have taken 30 minutes longer than planned!

Welcoming entertainment for the arrival of the guests

Many of your wedding guests will arrive at your wedding service venue long before you do. Welcome them with warm and inviting music played by a pianist, classical guitarist, string quartet, harpist or acoustic duo playing gently in the background.

Magical music for your wedding ceremony

Celebrate your ceremony in style with live music that reflects just how you both feel. Hire a classical singer or gospel choir to help lead the hymns in church, or sing romantic popular classics as you sign the register at your civil ceremony. If you really want to make an entrance, be piped into your wedding service by a bagpiper, or greeted by a trumpet fanfare. Remember, the musicians who entertained so beautifully when your guests arrive can also provide the music for your wedding ceremony too!

Dare to be different at your drinks reception

Wedding drinks receptions are designed to give your guests time to relax, chat and socialise while you have your photos taken. By providing unusual and subtle entertainment, you can keep guests amused without interrupting this natural flow of conversation. For a laid-back vibe, combine an acoustic lounge band and roving caricaturist. For a more lively feel, go for a combination of a jazz trio and street magician. Choose a solo singer or self-contained singer/pianists for smaller spaces. Or to save money, ask your wedding greeting or ceremony musicians to perform a more contemporary set; most string quartets can switch from classical to pop mode in an instant!

Wedding meal music and mayhem

By the time most guests get to your wedding meal, they are really hungry. So, save the entertainment until at least the starter has been eaten, or even until after the main, and make a feature of it. Have a Brazilian dance troupe bring carnival colour to your special day. Hire a comedy string quartet to bring a classic smile to everyone's faces. Or, provide ongoing entertainment to plug the gaps between the first eager eater to finish, and grandpa's plate being finally cleared, such as roving tabletop magicians, performing tricks in the palms of your guests' hands, (kids love these guys). Remember that caricaturist from the drinks reception? Bring them back to create mini masterpieces in under five minutes on paper or iPads.

The main event: your evening party entertainment

This is the part where budgets tend to be blown, as brides think they need a band and a DJ and a dance troupe and a laser light show and…

You don't. Choose the best band you can afford, and they'll often provide everything you need. For example, most top wedding bands perform two stunning sets of music to dance to, and then provide an iPod stuffed with tunes for the gaps in between. They'll also provide superb lighting, a high quality PA system and make the whole evening seems like a private club gig just for you. Some then offer an additional DJ service, so you can have the best of both worlds.

The same ‘value for money’ package applies to Rat Pack tribute bands (who often come with dancers), 70s disco bands (who do a lot of dancing anyway), Motown bands (who are so cool you'll just want to watch them) and even ceilidh bands (who offer iPod music between sets so you can cool down). So, you can have music and entertainment all night long without the added cost of a separate DJ.

And finally…

As your guests make their way home, give them one last surprise, as fire and glow performers light the way to the car park or waiting taxis. Release floating candles on a lake, fly paper lanterns high into the night sky (airports permitting), or finish with a bespoke firework display to your favourite music.
