Ruth Taylor and Robert Rippon married on May 31, 2019 at The Mansion, Roundhay Park in Leeds.

The bride was diagnosed with a rapidly aggressive form of Motor Neurone Disease in July 2018 and the wedding was arranged in just five months to ensure the couple could marry before her condition deteriorated further.

Dr Stewart Manning, a retired doctor and goodwill ambassador for the Robert Sinclair Davidson Foundation, got in touch with Ruth after reading about her story in The Yorkshire Evening Post.

Stewart says: “Ruth told me she had dreamt of getting married at The Mansion since she was a little girl. Following discussions with Dine, who use The Mansion as a wedding venue, they offered to host the event with a very generous discount.” Ruth also received financial assistance from the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Stewart worked with Ira B Silverman, a local restaurateur and experienced wedding planning to help enlist the services of other local wedding suppliers. Following an article published by Bride in February, several organisations and suppliers offered to donate their services at a greatly reduced rate.  Liam Cheeseman at Dine also worked closely with Stewart in the lead up to the wedding.

Ruth and Robert shared their day with close friends and family. The bride says: “The help I have received has taken all the pressure from me. The quick organisation of the wedding meant that I could walk and talk on my special day. For five months I concentrated on getting married, not my illness.”

The day was made very personal to the bride and groom. The colour purple featured throughout the details at Ruth’s request. The songs One Day Like This by Elbow, Come and Get Your Love by Redbone and A Change is Going to Come by Otis Redding featured in the celebrations.

“I can’t express my gratitude fully to all the people involved. Each one of you played a part in creating a memorable day,” says Stewart. “One person can’t change the world but anyone can change the world for one person – and we did!”

The newlyweds are currently on a luxury honeymoon in Crete, a trip donated to them by Kuoni.

Ruth, Robert and Stewart would like to thank all the suppliers who generously donated their services.
