Laughter and Joy: Simon and Joanne Aldridge (née Tanser)

The Aldridges had such a wonderful wedding day, they’re already planning a blessing to do it all over again

Wedding date: 21 May 2011

Ceremony and reception venue: The Kingscote Barn, Binley Farm, Tetbury.

Tell us about the proposal – how did it happen? In December 2009, Jo and I went to Sri Lanka to enjoy an extra holiday before I started my new job in January. We have been lucky enough to go on lots of lovely holidays, and Jo had got to the stage where she thought that if I hadn’t taken the opportunity to propose in Mauritius, Thailand or Antigua, she probably had no hope! My original plan had been to propose whilst we rode an elephant or something romantic like that. However, on our first night, whilst we sat on our balcony looking and feeling dishevelled after 20 long hours of travelling, I realised I couldn’t bear the wait any longer… so I dropped to one knee. At first, Jo thought I was joking – it took about five minutes for her to realise that I was really proposing!

The big day

It really was the best day ever; it was everything we wanted and more – a mix of tears, laughter… and sadness when it was all over. We are already planning a blessing so we can do it all over again!

Picking highlights is hard but the red double-decker bus used to transport the wedding party from our overnight accommodation to the Barn looked fantastic. The speeches were great fun, with the guests either in tears or laughing their heads off throughout!

The honeymoon

It was unconventional – for a start, there were 13 of us! Lots of our friends were going away on a group trip on the Monday after our wedding; we didn’t want to miss out, so we went along. It was a fantastic week that just felt like an extension of the wedding celebrations – we have called it a ‘mini-moon’.

We have now started to plan (and save for!) our proper honeymoon to the South Pacific. We plan to go away in September because we wanted something else to look forward to and to extend the celebration as far as possible!

Best bits

Simon: Watching Jo walk down the aisle – it took everything I had not to burst into tears!

Jo: The ceremony – being able to make my promises to Simon surrounded by the people that mean the world to me.
