Kuramathi Island Resort
Kuramathi Maldives, which has long been one of Universal Resort’s most successful resorts re-launched in November 2009 as Kuramathi Island Resort showcasing a wealth of new features to excite holidaymakers from across the globe.
Situated in the diminutive Maldivian archipelago of Rasdhoo Atoll, Kuramathi Island is a mere 1.8 km in length and is trailed by a snaking kilometre of white sandbank, lending a dramatic quality to the idyllic surroundings. A sense of tranquil isolation is created by an environment of lush and verdant vegetation fringed by the azure waters of the Indian Ocean. However, the apparent remoteness of the island is easily accessible as transfers from Male International Airport take just 20 minutes by seaplane and approximately 90 minutes via speedboat.
Once on the island, visitors experience a private paradise of exotic gardens and secluded beaches. Many of the 290 scattered guest villas are newly built or fully-refurbished and are subtly integrated into the natural habitat. Entry-level accommodation is in the form of Garden Villas located close to the beach with features including a king-sized bed, sun-loungers, flat-screen cable television, DVD player and coffee/tea making facilities.
Beach Villas retain the facilities of the Garden Villa whilst adding a four-poster king-sized bed and outdoor rainfall shower. They are also more intimately situated with Deluxe Beach Villas being sited in prime locations nearer the ocean. Water Villas which hover directly over the lagoon have a wooden deck leading down into the ocean waters and both Beach and Water Villas may be upgraded to contain Jacuzzi, twin vanities, ipod docking station and espresso machines.
The ultimate in romantic escapism is catered for by two Honeymoon Beach Villas. These are the largest villas available and contain separate living areas, Jacuzzi, private garden and all the features seen in other villas. As the Maldives is a natural choice for any couple, intimate meals can be shared via the resort’s Private Dining Experiences; perfect for the ultimate romantic gesture or proposal. The resort also offers several “renewal of love” packages where guests can choose to receive a beautiful, fully-arranged service on the beach, sandbank or the “chapel of love”.
Kuramathi hosts an array of dining options to suit all palates. Malaafaiy, Haruge and Farivalhu restaurants serve continental breakfast, light lunch and buffet dinners whilst across the island restaurants specialise in Indian, Thai, Italian, Barbecue and Seafood menus. The resort now offers Basic and Select all-inclusive packages to help easily tailor the options to suit each budget.
The range of activities available at the resort will keep even the most active guest occupied, including a fully-equipped sports centre with gymnasium, swimming pool, floodlit tennis court, sauna and Jacuzzi. Visitors may learn all about the coral reefs, for which Kuramathi is renowned, from a resident marine biologist at the Bio Station and for those wishing to experience their colourful splendour in person, there are endless opportunities for underwater adventures. The resort contains two fully equipped dive schools with multi-lingual instructors who can guide divers of all skill levels through a range of PADI courses and dive sites where they will freely mingle with Hammerhead Sharks, turtles, manta-rays and a myriad of other marine life. Reassuringly, the island also houses superb medical facilities, including diagnostic devices, decompression chamber, x-ray machines and an experienced staff of doctors.
Back on the surface there is a wide-range of watersports; from windsurfing, catamaran sailing and canoeing, to waterskiing and wakeboarding. The Aqua Sport and Fun Centre organises a variety of sailing excursions where guests can partake in island-hopping, guided snorkelling safari, sunset cruises and big game fishing.
For children, there is Bageecha kids club (Bageecha is the local name for a garden or park), which will keep youngsters occupied during the day with treasure hunts, nature walks, snorkelling and beach activities, and keep them enthralled during the evening with discos, games and movie nights. Over 300 sqm are devoted to Bageecha, the facilities and staff of which are dedicated to providing children from years 3 – 12 with fun and excitement. Parents are free to relax, secure that their little ones are both safe and happy.
Indulgence can be found at the Kuramathi Spa, where therapies to rejuvenate and relax the mind and body are administered by skilled professionals. Balinese, Thai and Ayurvedic massage are practised with body wraps, waxing and facials being just a flavour of the other options available. Singles and couples treatment rooms are located on the beach and over the lagoon allowing a calming panoramic view of the ocean. The spa itself also features a steam sauna, icy plunge pool and rainfall shower for use before and after the treatments. For those who prefer shops to saunas, there are several boutiques including The Island Collection, Jewellery Shop and the Photo Shop, all conveniently situated near the main reception.
Entertainment revolves around the resort’s six bars which host moonlit discos and live music from the island’s two-piece band. All the fine wines, beers and cocktails one would expect of a first-class resort are served day and night and no matter where you are on the island you will be just a short buggy ride away from a good time. Those who are weary from the day’s excitement may simply choose to watch a movie under the stars instead.
However one chooses to spend their time on the island, whether it be whiling away hours in the spa, exploring the natural majesty of the Indian Ocean, socializing with fine food and good company or simply lazing in the tropical sun, Kuramathi Island Resort will be an cherished memory for couples, groups and families alike.
