Karl Lagerfeld, creative director of French fashion house Chanel, has died at age 85.

A spokesperson for Lagerfeld posted a statement on Instagram which said: "The House of KARL LAGERFELD shares, with deep emotion and sadness, the passing of its creative director, Karl Lagerfeld, on February 19, 2019, in Paris, France.

"He was one of the most influential and celebrated designers of the 21st century and an iconic, universal symbol of style. Driven by a phenomenal sense of creativity, Karl was passionate, powerful and intensely curious. He leaves behind an extraordinary legacy as one of the greatest designers of our time, and there are no words to express how much he will be missed."

The news follows reports that Lagarfeld had been in "ill health" for a few weeks and had missed several fashion shows earlier this year. Many within the fashion industry have paid tributue on social media, including Donatella Versace, Henry Holland and Victoria Beckham.

The German designer was also the creative director for Fendi and designed collections for his own self-titled brand, Karl Lagerfeld.

Lagerfeld joined Coco Chanel back in 1983 and went on to produce up to eight collections a year for the French fashion house. One of the most antitcipated collections was the seasonal Haute Couture line whcih showcased show-stopping and flamboyant bridal gowns.

We take a look at some of the most iconic Chanel bridal gowns during Lagerfeld's three decade reign at Chanel:

1. The bridal swimsuit, S/S19

One of the most talked about bridal looks to date was from the recent spring/summer 19 collection. Model, Vittoria Ceretti, closed the show in an embroidered silver bathing suit, complete with swim-style cap and veil. Chanel described the look as “a summer take on a Haute Couture wedding dress”.

5. Striking silver, H/C17

Throughout the 2017 collections at Chanel, feathers and beaded embroidery dominated the catwalk and so it was expected to appear within the bridal looks, but not quite like this. Silver and grey replaced classic white and ivory for a cool, contemporary and edgy look.

This blush pink dress with intricate hand beaded floral detailing sparked inspiration for brides to step away from the norm and the bridal white tradition.
