Iain Henderson Designs make bespoke jewellery, in Bingley and have just won an award at the North Wedding Awards – voted for by customers

Last week Iain Henderson Designs won an Outstanding Customer Service Award at the North Wedding Awards Show, voted for by customers.

“I’m delighted to have won this award,’ says Iain, “It means a great deal to us all. Knowing that what we are doing is having the desired effect is brilliant”

Iain was raised in Addingham and has never strayed from his Yorkshire roots. Even his Silversmiths degree was completed in Sheffield. Known for his down to-earth, friendly approach, attention to detail, and good northern humour, Iain is very much the heart of his business.

Now based in Cottingley, Bingley, Iain Henderson Designs has been established for more than 17 years, offering customers bespoke engagement and wedding rings as well as a range of other jewellery.

Previously sold through independent jewellery shops nationwide, Iain was concerned that customers weren’t being given the wealth of his experience or the service that he was so strongly in favour of.

“Buying jewellery can be rather daunting,” says Iain. “It’s a special purchase, but often customers are not given all of the information available. So often it seems like customers are buying the jewellery the shop needs to sell not what is best for the customer. That bothers me.

“I sat down and thought about what I wanted as a customer and then applied that to my business.”

Out went any ideas of a high street shop and instead, in came a welcoming studio, situated behind Iain’s house, with private parking, and appointments that are available into the evening as well as on Saturdays.

“We work on appointments only – jewellery is a really special purchase and we want customers to feel special. When they arrive, they have our attention; they can have a chat over a cuppa with us, in our workshop (which the gents particularly love), where their ring or jewellery will be made. They can have a look at different styles, we get to listen to what they want, offer our knowledge and advice, look at how we can achieve the best out of their budget. Some of our customers have told us that they thought that bespoke jewellery meant expensive jewellery – in actual fact, the majority of our products are cheaper than the high street and I can honestly say we will offer better value.

“At the end of the day, I’m a jeweller, not a salesman and it’s my name out there – I want happy customers. In the same way people have a long serving relationship with a hairdresser, tailor or tradesman; I want my customers to come back – perhaps for an anniversary or Christmas present, a gift to celebrate the birth of their first child, a set of cufflinks as a treat for that promotion. I want my customers to have to confidence to recommend our work and service.”
