How to… keep young guests entertained

If you are inviting children and babies to your wedding, here are 10 tips for keeping tots out of trouble.

1. Ask ushers to seat parents with small children at the end of aisles and near doors in case they need to make a swift exit.

2. If parents are bringing babies, check with your reception venue in advance that there is somewhere they can breastfeed in peace, or if they can have access to bottle-warming facilities.

3. Set up a designated corner or room of you reception with a variety of board games and edible prizes.

4. Give younger guests their own goody bags with things like balloons, colouring pens, puzzle books and treats to keep them amused during the ceremony or while pictures are being taken.

5. If you’re marrying in warmer months, hire out jumbo-sized games like giant Jenga and Connect Four and encourage children and adults to get involved. LA Leisure in North Walsham offers a host of these including Snakes and Ladders and Draughts (01692 536548; www.la-leisure.co.uk).

6. Think about child-friendly foods. A heavy three-course meal will go down well with the adults, but might not be to children’s tastes. Enquire in advance if the catering venue offers a children’s menu.

7. If your reception venue has accessible grounds, consider hiring a bouncy castle or involve everyone in a team game, but make sure you get permission from the venue first.

8. Have a magician, balloon-maker, storyteller or clown at your wedding – disappearing rabbits always go down particularly well with children. Magician Olly Day specialises in close-up magic, working around wedding tables to keep children entertained (01603 701711; www.weddingmagic.info).

9. Give each child a disposable camera and let them click away to capture those child’s eye views.

10. If you are expecting a lot of children, hire an experienced babysitter to host a children’s table at the reception. That way, the parents are free to enjoy themselves in the knowledge that their little ones are being looked after and entertained. If you’ve never employed a babysitter, ask a responsible member of your family or go on recommendation.
