There’s a huge trend for DIY wedding photography, and the great news for anyone planning
their big day is that it’s easy and budget friendly to get involved. Newlyweds now have the perfect solution for creating a professional quality wedding album at home – a photo book.

Here, WhiteWall photographer and product manager, Jan-Ole Schmidt, shares top tips to help you capture and preserve a special selection of snaps, taken by friends and family at the heart of your celebration. With a little planning you can include those personal moments and details a pro might miss, beautifully showcased in true colour and creating the ultimate souvenir of your big day.

For smart photos, avoid your smart phone

Photos snapped on a mobile look great on social media and on screen, but when you come to print them you may find the quality is limiting. This might affect the colour as well as the detail. Ask your friends to bring their cameras to make sure you’ll have a high res image with the flexibility to print in true colour at a range of sizes. Some pictures deserve a full page, after all.

Capture the moment

Friends can share in the passion of your big day in a way a professional photographer you didn’t know previously simply can’t. Task your friends with capturing those unguarded moments throughout the day, such as when an in-joke is shared for heartfelt images that reflect the soul of the special occasion. Posed group photos have their place, but nothing will make you smile like seeing a genuine flash of happiness or spontaneous loving gesture caught on camera. Timing is everything – try continuous shooting mode and you may find you have a natural, beautiful photo that is a lot more relaxed than the first staged shot. Remember to turn the sound off your camera so as to be as unobtrusive as possible.

Celebrate the details

Reportage style photography is designed to tell a story, and this extends to the little details that surround you during your day. This might be your unworn wedding shoes and dress laid out ready to wear, a sentimental charm attached to your bouquet, the table decorations and menu that were carefully chosen or even the confetti scattered across the floor. Remind your friends to take pictures of their surroundings and you’ll have a collection of images that will make your resulting photo book look worthy of a feature in a glossy magazine.

Tell the story with a pre-planned shot list

While not everything can be planned in advance, know the sorts of photos you’d like to keep as special memories in a photo book and work backwards to create a list of images that your friends know to capture. This can be useful if you have a large wedding and there’s a chance you might otherwise miss out an important family member in the whirlwind of the celebrations. Keep the details and special moments in mind when creating the list in order to curate a story and sense of structure and cohesion to the end result. It’s worth also considering the photo you would like to use on your cover, such as a close up of your bouquet against your white dress, which could be beautifully enhanced by a linen book cover material, for example.

Consider how you would like to use the photo book

Photo books can be great thank you gifts for important members of the wedding party and close family members. It’s easy to create multiple prints of your finished book, or consider tailoring your image selection so as to have one that relatives will treasure, for example. Once your layout is in place, it couldn’t be easier to swap in different photos for a quick personalised update. A range of formats such as small square, standard portrait and large landscape (plus many others in between) mean you can create smaller versions of your book for gift recipients if you wish.
