A Halloween-themed wedding in Rochester

02 Jun 2021

Melissa Lindgren and Peter Tushingham managed to hold the small wedding they wanted under Covid-19 restrictions and will follow it up with a bigger celebration this Halloween

How was (if at all) your wedding affected by Covid-19?
Thankfully restrictions opened up enough for us to have the small ceremony we wanted but we did have to have it in a different building as the original council building would not have been big enough for social distancing measures. Masks had to be worn inside by the guests and only 15 people were allowed so only a couple couldn’t come. We still wore our planned outfits, I managed to get my dress taken in as soon as shops could open again.

What was the theme for the day, and did you have a colour scheme?
The theme was autumn, and specifically Halloween. We have our ‘better late than never’ party this October just before Halloween.

Tell us about the dress
I am not one for clothes shopping, so trying on dresses did not fill me with joy. Having said that, WED2B at Bromley was a really relaxed place. The one I chose was the first dress I tried on but I needed a bigger size to breathe and thankfully they had it. I did try on three others for fun but did not feel comfortable in them.

Tell us about your floral arrangements
The flowers were from Hobbycraft and I added a crystal spider brooch to them for my something blue.

Often the aspect that makes a wedding original to the couple is the detail – tell us about the details of the day
My crown and little black details in my accessories gave me my Halloween feel and the ring box coffin I decorated made a spooky laughing sound when open which made everyone laugh.

How did you feel as you walked down the aisle?
Happy it was all happening.

What was your most memorable moment?
Seeing Pete for the first time in our outfits.

What was the most challenging aspect of planning this wedding?
Waiting was the most challenging part, not knowing if you would have to cancel the day before.

What was the most important investment for you?
Making sure everyone would get the food and drink they wanted.

Tell us about your wedding cake
I met Mary at Cake Lips, at a wedding fair and knew she was the person to do the cake as she also loves Halloween. We had to get a smaller cake for the micro wedding and all I asked for was pumpkin, skeleton and autumn. What she came up with was so fun, I can’t wait to see my next cake.

Where did you go on honeymoon?
We went on a family moon a week later to Paignton in Devon, and as places still had restrictions it was peaceful and was really nice. Hopefully we will get to go away just the two of us when Covid restrictions have relaxed enough.

Do you have any advice for couples in the planning stages?
Do what makes you happy and have fun, otherwise what is the point!
