Choosing the perfect underwear for your wedding day is an absolute must for a bride and can make your gown look breathtaking. But it’s also important to look like a beautiful bride on your wedding evening, even when the gown is gone.

“Lingerie is the foundation of making a good outfit a great one and as such there are many things to take into consideration,” says Louise Barnard, creative director at English silk loungewear brand, Violet and Wren.

“We don’t design technical lingerie but have a love for a more relaxed and softer approach to dressing, but when it comes to your bridal lingerie, it is very important to choose the right style for your dress,” adds Louise, who makes up one half of the company alongside friend and business partner, Helen Pollington.

With delicate silk robes from Violet and Wren becoming a style staple for many brides in the UK, and the new SS16 collection ‘Face to the Sun’ which features prints including Sicilian tulip and Amalfi daisy about to drop, we caught up with the brand.

They share the secrets behind a beautiful bridal silhouette when it comes to lingerie and a sneak peek of the new range available from January.

Whats your advice for brides looking for something sensual and different for their wedding night?
We know that new brides feel on top of the world and believe they should start their new life as a Mrs with a touch of luxury and seductive indulgence. When whisking your new husband to the bedroom, you want to look as amazing in your lingerie as you did in your wedding dress. A silk kimono is the perfect tease – ultra comfortable and stylish, sensual to touch, and it can be as revealing as you want. Depending on your style, and how seductive you want to be, you can layer a kimono over a matching slip, or mix it up with your favourite lingerie.

Top tip: For something really special, we offer a bespoke monogramming service, so your kimono can be personalised with your new initials, and as well as our signature plain colours, we also offer to make pieces in from a selection of bespoke colours to match with the theme of your wedding.

Which items are designed with a bride in mind in the new collection?
From our SS16 collection the soft and playful Amalfi daisy is the perfect, classic wedding loungewear print with its pretty summer florals and a nod to bohemian romance on a delicate ivory silk base. The luxury kimono and turban pieces are the ideal cover-ups for wedding morning make-up photographs, while the slip and underwear set can co-ordinate for an utterly romantic wedding night choice.

How about for a beach wedding?
For a beach wedding, the Sicilian tulip collection featuring the billowing sheer silk maxi robe and co-ordinating lingerie set would be perfect, with the maxi robe doubling up as a luxury beach kaftan. The dark and exotic Tahitian Palm range can offer the brides who want a departure from white something bolder and exotic – think Bianca Jagger in a 1970s island paradise vibe. Totally fashion-forward and aching to be styled back with your day wardrobe after the big day.

What kind of bride is the Violet and Wren range designed for?
We carefully design our collections for a bride who is looking for something truly beautiful, handcrafted and unique. She is looking for a piece which speaks to her, and which she will love and cherish for many years to come.

Our pieces are designed not only for bridal, but also as luxury loungewear pieces which can transcend through to the honeymoon and beyond, becoming a much-loved piece of your wardrobe. We want our pieces to be worn not only in the bedroom but to be worn with your jeans for brunch with the girls, or with a high-waisted skirt for a special night out. We want to make brides feel beautiful, feminine and effortless in their lingerie with the added feel good factor that they are supporting British craftsmanship and manufacture.

Five top tips for choosing wedding lingerie from Violet and Wren:

1. Think about your silhouette
As any bride will tell you, choosing “the dress” is one of the most important and exciting decisions to be made for your wedding day and you want your lingerie to enhance not only the dress but your figure too. The choice of lingerie on your wedding day depends so much on the style of dress that you are going to be wearing and your specific silhouette and needs. The right lingerie can enhance, smooth, add, or even minimise fullness and above all should be something you can comfortably wear all day. The last thing you want is to be uncomfortable and fidgety through your day.

2. Keep the dress in mind
When it comes to choosing lingerie to be worn under your wedding dress our biggest piece of advice would be to choose your underwear in conjunction with your dress and wear it to all the fittings, as it will change the way the dress falls and your posture in the dress.

3. Speak to your dressmaker or bridal specialist
Be open and honest with your dressmaker or bridal specialist as they have years of experience and can help with your choices and impart fantastic tricks of the trade depending on your specific needs. There are amazing cheats and shortcuts for every silhouette from built in cup support to backless solutions and integral smoothing panels that can be incorporated into the fabric of your dress. These things can really help make your lingerie requirements a doddle.

4. Make it fun
Technical talk aside, if your dress allows it, why not add a touch of fun to your lingerie choices and inject a splash of colour or beautiful print to your garter or wedding day knickers? You could even co-ordinate them with a kimono for your wedding morning and honeymoon. The day is all about you, so choose your favourite thing – there are no rules.

5. Wear something you feel amazing in
Just wear what makes you feel amazing and have fun with it! At Violet and Wren we are about to launch a bespoke service that allows you to co-ordinate your lingerie with a bespoke garter, or even the groomsmen’s bow ties and pocket squares.

6. Complement your body
Whatever you choose, we believe that your wedding lingerie should be something that should be cherished and worn and again and again as a favourite piece – it doesn’t have to be ivory or classic, choose something you love, which fits your style!  Most importantly, you want your lingerie to make you feel like the best possible version of you, to complement your body and your style.
