When it comes to the perfect honeymoon, most of us dream of long-haul holidays to some of the world’s most luxurious destinations.

The Caribbean, Mexico and the Maldives spring to mind, but they’ve been done time and time again. Instead, why not spare a thought for dazzling Dubai or captivating Cape Town?

Chris Blackwell of Destination 2 offers some inspiration, detailing some of the world’s newest and hottest honeymoon destinations.

1. Dubai, the Middle East

Dubai’s popularity has rocketed over the last few decades and its booming tourism industry shows no sign of waning anytime soon. The Middle Eastern beauty spot is perfect for honeymooners looking for a romantic getaway in the sun.

So, what can you expect from Dubai? Well for starters there’s the city’s stellar selection of must-see landmarks, including the Burj Khalifa, Burj Al Arab and the iconic Palm Jumeirah island.

On top of this, Dubai is home to a superb selection of four and five-star resorts, where you’ll be waited on hand and foot and treated like royalty.

Looking for a date night? Reserve a table in one of the city’s many famed restaurants, many of which are owned by some of the world’s most famous Michelin-starred chefs. Palatial Dubai is the perfect choice for those looking for glitz and glamour on their honeymoon.

Top tip: If you’re planning to eat out at one of Dubai’s more exclusive restaurants, it’s worth reserving a table at your preferred establishment well in advance to avoid disappointment.

2. Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town’s breath-taking landscape and fantastic weather makes it an obvious choice for your dream honeymoon. But surprisingly, the South African city is often overlooked.

From boozy evenings out on the iconic Long Street nightclub district to cage diving in the region’s shark-infested waters, Cape Town has it all. You’re also spoilt for choice when it comes to romantic settings to enjoy with your loved one. Take a cable car for two to the top of Table Mountain or watch the sunset from a soft white beach.

As for South African cuisine, it’s amazing. Expect a colourful and flavoursome array of tasty delights that will leave your taste buds tingling. Cape Town will leave you and your life partner awe-inspired and breathless.

Top tip: You cannot visit South Africa without going on safari; speak to your tour operator about local excursions and tour operators in Cape Town.

3. Varadero, Cuba

Every island in the Caribbean is synonymous with paradise, whether you’re sunning yourself on the warm white sands in Jamaica or dancing to Calypso in Trinidad.

But head further north and you’ll soon stumble upon the tranquil treasure trove that is Varadero in Cuba. Situated on a 20km peninsula, Cuba’s largest resort is magical. Expect a wide selection of world-class hotels, first-class restaurants and enviable beaches.

Feeling adventurous? You may want to consider combining your stay in Varadero with a trip to the bustling capital of Havana. The city is famed for its old vintage American cars, salsa spirit and historic architecture. But if the journey doesn’t appeal, you’ll find plenty to keep you occupied in Varadero.

Top tip: Mojito cocktails are a Cuban speciality!

4. Phuket, Thailand

Thailand is rapidly becoming one of the world’s most sought-after destinations, but there’s one part of the country that sticks out in particular – Phuket. Luxury is abundant on this magnificent island; you’ll find some of the world’s biggest hotel chains, as well as private beaches and secluded spots to enjoy with your soulmate.

If you need another reason to visit Phuket, look no further than the island’s many national parks, ancient temples and spectacular Buddhist monuments.

Phuket is also famous for its infamous nightlife, full moon parties and all-night go-go bars. If you want to be close to the action, you may want to book a stay near the city of Patong.

Top tip: Haggle in the markets to get the best possible price on any purchase. There’s always a bargain to be had.

5. Sri Lanka, Indian Ocean

Situated just south of India is the jaw-dropping island of Sri Lanka. Travel to this unrivalled region for an outstanding selection of beaches, resorts and sublime natural landscapes.

Sri Lanka is the perfect alternative to the Maldives, with plenty on offer for both you and your life partner. Of course, you cannot mention Sri Lanka without paying homage to the island’s delectable cuisine – fragrant meat curries, fish dishes and sweet desserts.

You’ll find an endless list of activities and fun pursuits to enjoy to help you to make the most of your honeymoon, from elephant rides to an excursion of the ancient settlement of Sigiriya.

Top tip: The Indian Ocean is perfect for scuba diving, speak to your tour operator about your nearest dive centre for a once in a lifetime experience.
