09 Oct 2015
Adventurous couples take note – discover our selection of free-spirited escapes for honeymooners who prefer jungle treks and safaris to sunbathing and pool-side reading. Lorna Dockerill prepares you for some wild travel…
Wedding planning can be stressful. Once the bride has kicked off her wedding shoes and the garter is no where to be seen, the honeymoon trip is as welcome as an ice cold gin and tonic on hot summer’s evening after a long week at work. It’s the final stretch of the wedding celebration after months of meticulous event organising, so there’s doubt that it has to be an experience of a lifetime.
Yet what if lounging by a pool all day slathering on sun cream before getting baked in the sun isn’t up your street? What if white-water rafting, jungle treks and horseback escapades are more suited?
Look no further – we’ve put together a selection of five free-spirited escapes for honeymooners who are wild at heart.
1. Costa Rica, Florblanca
Best for National Park roaming, diving and crocodile watching
Begin married life together exploring the tropical rainforests and unspoiled coastlines of Costa Rica on a healthy honeymoon called ‘Discover Recover’. From white water rafting through a volcanic national park, to zip-lining and hiking across the unique volcanic landscapes, this is an activity holiday for couples excited by exploration. Choose from trips such as boarding a catamaran to discover the hidden depths of the ocean while snorkelling or diving, or float down the Tarcoles River for a spot of crocodile, iguana and lizard watching. Before going back to reality, enjoy a refreshing surf together in the Pacific ocean followed by a spa treatment (well, we figure you’ll have earned a massage after those activities).
Health and Fitness Travel (0203 397 8891) offers 10 nights in Costa Rica from £2,425pp. Price includes a Discover Recover programme, return flights and transfers.
2. South Africa, Samara Game Reserve
Best for safari and wildlife
Choose to stay in one of three lodges –Manor House, Mountain Retreat or Karoo Lodge. Two of which (Manor House and Mountain Retreat) are available as private villas for couples hoping to escape from it all.
Home-cooked meals are served in various venues, so after an evening spent game spotting you can return to your suite for a romantic meal. Hike to wild olive groves, explore and interact with the elusive cheetah, in addition to many other endangered animals and birds which are part of Samara’s conservation activities. With 70,000 acres of beautiful wilderness, wedding anxiety will be a distant memory. Take a private walk with your new spouse and get lost in the beauty of Africa.
