A family focused traditional Portuguese wedding

12 Sep 2020

American couple, Stephanie Costa and Andrew Kelser, travelled to Bombarral, Leiria, for a family focused wedding ceremony nestled within the vineyards of the Portuguese hills

Wedding planner, Rita Gonçalves of OUI LOVE YOU weddings, tells us about the couple's big day:

How did they choose the place to get married?

In the past, Quinta do Sanguinhal was one of the most important vineyard places in Bombarral, Portugal, with many people from the region working at the vineyards. It was well known and chosen by the bride, Stephanie's, parents who were born and lived nearby the Quinta.

What kind of wedding was this?

It is definitely a destination countryside wedding with the wedding taking place in the middle of the vineyards.

Did the couple have any special requests for their wedding?

The only request the couple had was a typical and traditional Portuguese wedding. Obviously tiles, fado, a lot of food and good wine are mandatory. Since Stephanie has a Portuguese family, doing a Portuguese wedding and giving the opportunity to show the traditions to the guests was what made it very special.

How did you come up with the concept of this wedding?

The bride's favorite color is yellow, so most of the decoration items had yellow detail on it. This was the main color of the wedding and the flowers too. The Portuguese tile was a must have - however, since the wedding concept was a traditional vineyard Portuguese wedding, we couldn't leave tiles and wine barrels by the side for the wedding decoration.

How did this wedding change your career as a wedding planner?

This couple has been with us since the beginning of 2018, so it was a long and amazing journey together. For us, it was a pleasure to create a typical Portuguese wedding for this lovely couple and to whom visit Portugal for the first time.

Were there any challenges for this wedding?

One of the most challenging things was the weather and also the ceremony location. When we book a wedding for July, we usually assume the weather is going to be amazing - however, since it was a location that had the sea nearby, the weather was unpredictable. The ceremony happened in the middle of the vineyard, right on the top of the hill with a stunning view - far away from the electricity spot and the floor wasn't very uneven. We were so happy in the end that everything took place where it was meant to be with a perfect sunny day.

What was the most heart-touching moment for the couple?

I believe that the most touching moment was the ceremony. Stephanie and Andrew were already legally married, so in Portugal they had a symbolic ceremony and their siblings were the celebrants. Actually, they tried to include all the family, so Stephanie reached the aisle with both parents and her grandmother was the one that gave the rings for the couple to exchange - it was a beautiful moment.
