Heather Sokolov married Frank Rooney at Sherbrooke Castle Hotel in Glasgow
With an added Marvel twist to their wedding day, they brought their two families together in a beautiful and memorable ceremony.
How did you meet?
We met through work. I work in a housing association and Frank was one of the electricians that worked for us
Tell us about the proposal.
Frank arranged a surprise 30th birthday party for me at the Torrance Hotel. He then proceeded to propose upon toasting my 30th birthday celebrations.
What was the theme for the day, and did you have a colour scheme?
We had a rustic theme with Marvel film elements. The colour scheme was mainly pinks and whites, anything soft and feminine.
What venue did you choose and why did you choose it?
We chose Sherbrooke Castle Hotel, it is such a grand building with a mix of modern and old and we loved where it was situated as it was easy for guests to get to.
When did you know when you’d found ‘the’ dress?
I tried on about six dresses in about four shops but it was in the second shop I found my Morilee dress, it just felt right and I felt beautiful in it.
Does the dress match the one you originally thought you would choose?
I always thought I would have gone for fitted dress as I’m quite petite and not very tall but the one I went for was a large princess style dress
What did the bridesmaids wear?
I had three bridesmaids in multiway maxi dresses in a blush colour. My bridesmaids were my sister Laura, my sister-in-law Carris and my step-daughter Louise.
What did the mother of the bride wear?
My mother wore a navy glittery long evening dress from Catherine’s of Patrick and a beautiful fascinator to match.
Where did you find your suits?
Groom and groomsmen got their kilts from Kilts 4 U.
Tell us about your floral arrangements.
I wanted a large wild bouquet and a smaller version for the bridesmaid with beautiful roses, ferns, eucalyptus and gyp. For my top table I had a large long display that hung over the table which was later moved to drape over the top table and my Mr and Mrs sign.
Often the aspect that makes a wedding original to the couple is the detail – tell us about the details of the day.
My husband and I love Marvel films so our little touches were based around this. We had a Marvel cake pop favours, half Marvel cake and marvel character button holes and boxers.
How did you feel as you walked down the aisle?
I felt amazing, I felt beautiful and it was lovely to see my partner so emotional to see me in my dress.
How did you make the ceremony personal to you?
My mum did a poem and we carried out a sand ceremony where my husband, his daughter and our son and I poured a vile of sand into an hourglass to combine our two families.
What was your most memorable moment?
The whole day was so memorable and went in so fast but I would say the most memorable moment was sitting down at 4am in bed and saying to each other we did it we are Mr. and Mrs. Rooney.
What was the most challenging aspect of planning this wedding?
I think getting everyone’s food order in time for the hotel to process was the most challenging.
What was the most important investment for you?
I think our honeymoon as we have never been away on holiday together just the two of us, so it was an exciting week away to Athens and well deserved us time, even though we missed our wee boy terribly.
What song did you choose for your first dance, and why?
James Arthur – Say You Won’t Let Go; The words were very meaningful and we both love singing it to each other as, of course, we want to love each other until we are grey and old.
Did you have any evening entertainment?
We had a DJ for the evening entertainment.
Tell us about your wedding cake.
We had a half rustic half Marvel cake. It was four tier and was amazing. I was even more amazed by it when it was finished and it tasted amazing. We had three different flavours; lemon, toffee and chocolate.
If you could go back and change anything, what would it be?
I think the only thing I would have changed was the entertainment at night I felt like the DJ wasn’t pushy enough to get people up and involved so I was slightly disappointed
Did anything go wrong on the day?
Unfortunately Frank’s kilt belt and shoe lace snapped on the day but apart from that everything went perfect!
Was there anything you wish you’d known before?
When people say enjoy every moment you really can’t imagine how fast the day goes in and how fast it’s all over.
Where did you go on honeymoon?
We left the Monday after our Saturday wedding and went to Athens for a week.
Do you have any advice for couples in the planning stages?
I found doing all the little bits at the start helps but then I was bored in the middle as there was nothing to do, the last stage is definitely a little stressful and everything comes together at once. I would say just take it a day at a time and step back and just make a to-do list.
