Ensure your honeymoon cruise is as sweet as can be

By online cruise guide, Cruise Critic

If the idea of a honeymoon cruise is one that appeals, you’ll be pleased to know that there’s a cruise for every individual taste, but as with finding that perfect, dream wedding dress – it often requires research and patience.

However, when it comes to planning the perfect honeymoon, you want to get it right first time. So if you’re keen to celebrate the start of your married life at sea, but aren’t sure where to begin - look no further! Cruise Critic, the world’s largest cruise reviews site and cruise community has expert advice to help you plan the perfect cruise honeymoon.

Before you start your research, we advise that you first consider what kind of honeymoon you’re looking for.

What type of holiday usually floats your boat?

Reflect on this, but also bear in mind that your requirements during a honeymoon may be very different to what you usually go for. If you generally tend to enjoy an adventure style, action-packed holiday, consider that following the somewhat stressful build-up to the big day, the honeymoon may be an eagerly awaited opportunity for pure relaxation.

Ask yourself whether you want:

• An active, outdoors based cruise honeymoon?

• Simplicity and ambience?

• Luxury and decadence?

• Informality and value?

Once you’ve narrowed down your requirements, you can decide which cruise line is most suited to your needs. Cruise Critic provides a comprehensive feature highlighting the cruise line choices.

Here are some general tips to help make your honeymoon smooth sailing:

Shout about it

It’s never guaranteed that you’ll receive preferential treatment because you’re on your honeymoon, but if you don’t let people know you could miss out!

Pre-cruise, inform your travel agent that you’re on your honeymoon, as they may be able to notify the cruise line. While onboard, be sure to give the staff a head’s up as you may benefit from extra perks, which add that extra touch of romance to your break.

Together, forever

Before you go away, sit down and plan what you’d really like to do while you’re away. Perhaps you’d like to treat yourself to an indulgent couples’ massage, or maybe you’d prefer a no expenses spared candlelit meal. Book it in before your cruise – this guarantees your spot, and removes the stress of last minute booking.

Two’s company

Again, another tip to highlight the importance of pre-planning. If the ship you’re honeymooning on has traditional dining, and you want to ensure an intimate dining experience, request a table for two as soon as possible, otherwise you could end up dining with strangers.

Aim to upgrade

As mentioned, waving the honeymoon card doesn’t always guarantee special treatment, but if you’re after a cabin upgrade it’s certainly worth mentioning that you’re on honeymoon. If this doesn’t help you to secure an upgrade, then there are other options. One way is to book a free upgrade promotion, as cruise lines occasionally provide special promotions with different cabin grades priced equally, meaning you theoretically obtain an upgrade. Travel agents often get advance notice of these promotions, so speak to them to find out if any are available. For more tips on cabin upgrades read Cruise Critic’s tips.

Romantic creativity

If you’re not usually a romantic type, be creative – after all, your honeymoon is the one time you should take a no holds barred approach. The sky is the limit, so consider romantic ideas you might not usually think of. What about visiting the Hotel Chocolat on St Lucia for some luxury and cacao cuisine, booking a private island for a romantic lunch or organising a private transfer to somewhere romantic like the Amalfi Coast? Speak to the Customer Relations or Shore Excursions Desk and they will happily organise a bespoke excursion.

If romance is high on the agenda, before booking find out what the different lines offer to help you create the honeymoon of your dreams.
