Doctors in love
There was a taste of the Orient in honour of the bride’s heritage at Mark and Helen’s wedding in Hebden Bridge
Mark Davies and Helen Allcock
Where: Ceremony at Gibson Mill, Hardcastle Crags, followed by reception at Hebden Bridge Town Hall
Photography: Paul Craig
We wanted to make the day about us. We have lived in Hebden Bridge and have worked as doctors in this valley for around 20 years.
Our guests met at the local train station to get on the vintage bus to take them to Hardcastle Crags and then had to walk a mile along a track though the woods to Gibson Mill. Guests arrived to the strains of two cellists who played up to and after the ceremony. We had Mark’s sister Susan and my brother Mark, reading poems. During the signing of the register Mark’s niece Maz O’Conner, a folk singer, sang a song she had written herself, and her brother Joe, played the melodeon. During the wedding breakfast our friend Richard Morris, an opera singer, sang an Italian love song between courses.
The day was wonderful; Helen Davies, our wedding planner kept everything running smoothly with calm, friendly efficiency so we could just relax and enjoy it. We wanted to avoid lots of staged, posed photographs and asked for a photo journalistic capture of the day – which is exactly what Paul Craig gave us. He was a real asset and with such a relaxed, informal approach that everyone kept asking who our friend taking the photos was.
Arriving at the reception was lovely, the stylist Chrissie Wright had done us proud.
We had wanted a hint of the Orient as I’m half Chinese and this was achieved with bouquets of orchids, touches of may blossom and bamboo chairs. My mother, Rosalind Teik Kooi Allcock, made the cake which was a rich fruit cake in a simple design draped with orchids
In the evening it was back to the Town Hall for dancing to a live band, The Measles. As neither of us are dancers we decided to keep our first dance simple and fun, dancing to Bob Marley’s Could It Be Love.
