Deep colours meet muted shades in this Surrey wedding shoot

17 Jun 2019

Showcasing an array of colour co-ordinated details, this Surrey shoot allows the beauty of its venue to shine through

Justine Burton of Berties Photography shares the details of this shoot which was inspired by the venue, Frensham Heights School.

Tell us about the venue

Frensham Heights in Farnham, Surrey is a magnificent country house used as a private school and is celebrating 25 years as a wedding venue. Built in 1898, Frensham Heights is a proud and beautiful building with a wonderful heritage, hosting fabulous house parties at the turn of the century, been a sanctuary for wounded soldiers from the Great War, and has provided the backdrop to hundreds of weddings, receptions and celebrations.

The venue is renowned for its magnificent reception rooms, 120 acres of beautiful grounds with stunning vistas, however little is known about how exceptional the food offering is provided by the in-house catering. We were keen to show the many rooms the house has to offer to their best advantage. We felt a ceremony set-up using the grand high ceiling of the panelled Jacobean ‘Long Gallery’ with its baronial fireplace and impressive stained-glass window was essential.

What colours did you use for the shoot?

The shoot focused on a contemporary colour scheme of blue grey, blush and burgundy, designed by wedding planner and stylist Suzanne Killalea of ASK Weddings and Events. We wanted to appeal to the modern bride and show how you can move away from tradition and still have all the dreamy romance. Suzanne was particularly keen to style the venue without using traditional white, and instead used contemporary soft greys and blushes with a focus on a few striking blue grey elements, such as the taper candles and geometric design stationery kindly provided by Valerie at Bewitching Stationery.

Tell us about the flower arrangements

Nicola Andrews of Jasmine Flowers was the floral mastermind and had a clear idea of using burgundy accents within the incredible peach and blush floral displays, both lining the ceremony aisle and on the registrar table, piano and banquet tables. In the Edwardian ballroom, she used a combination of low and high centrepieces on the tables and the piano was draped in a magnificent arrangement of burgundy ranunculus, pink lisianthus, hellebores, sweet avalanche and bombastic roses, burgundy chrysant, pale pink astilbe and peach hypericum berries.

What outfits did you use for the shoot?

The dresses were selected and provided by Victoria Harper of Farnham Boutique, who also designs and makes all of her own bridal hair accessories, used in the shoot.

What other elements did you use to tie the theme of the shoot together?

The opulent five-tier cake, created by Amazing Grace Cakes, is featured within the light and elegant Louis XVI drawing room with stunning views across the lawns from the beautiful bay window - perfect for photographs and more intimate ceremonies.

All three of the featured rooms are licensed for marriages. The house is also blessed with a beautiful terrace showcasing the outstanding views, and an intimate walled garden, fully licensed if you prefer an outdoor ceremony. The venue is only available for certain weekend dates during school holidays throughout the year, making it even more exclusively yours for the entire weekend.
