Surveying 1,500 Brits, marketing agency Spike Digital has unveiled the costs of attending a destination wedding with the most expensive (long haul) destination revealed as Antigua.
It will cost guests an average of £4,000 to attend a wedding on the Caribbean island - costing nearly £4,000. However, a short haul wedding in Turkey will set guests back much less, although still a hefty amount at £834.83.
These significant costs can be attributed to the reason why 35% of respondents claiming they would not attend a wedding abroad at all. And even if they’d been given a key role such as bridesmaid or usher, just under half of Brits would turn the role down with 30% of Brits declaring that - given the honour - they would feel pressured into paying to attend.
If guests did decide to attend, the average amount they would be prepared to spend on a family wedding is £1,199.74, compared to £1,016.67 on a friend’s wedding – although 10% of Brits said they would spend over £3,000 on a friend's wedding abroad.
Their attendance would be seen as 'a gift in itself', with one fifth of the Brits declaring that this would mean they wouldn't buy a gift for the happy couple. Even more surprisingly, more than half of those surveyed thought the couple should actually contribute to the costs in some way (perhaps by paying for the hotel where the guests are staying).
Duncan Colman, director at Spike Digital, says: "Weddings are notoriously expensive for any couple but it can also be costly for their guests too. The happy couple might have to consider this when planning their big day, as our survey shows over a third of those invited might not be able to attend."
In response to the findings, Spike Digital has created an interactive infographic which highlights the costs of attending a wedding abroad; try it out here.
