Taunton-based entrepreneur Charlotte Donohoe of Charlotte Jane Cakes is never one to avoid a challenge.

Diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago, she left the fast-paced world of recruitment behind to focus on her first love – baking. She adapted her cottage kitchen to become a charming space in which to bake and decorate celebration cakes and offer her customers a taste of British baking at its best. Her drive and enthusiasm has made sure Charlotte Jane Cakes has gone from strength to strength.

‘I decided to focus on celebration cupcakes, baked in small quantities using local ingredients’ says Charlotte. Innovative designs and attention to detail paid off, and Charlotte has celebrated a summer of weddings, birthdays and anniversaries. ‘I can offer a taste of heaven in a range of flavours – vanilla, lemon, chocolate, red velvet, traditional fruit cake. In fact, whatever your heart desires for your big day.’

‘I’m thrilled at the response I’ve had, particularly to the cupcake ‘hen’ parties I now offer and the children’s events I organise. I have also established links with a number of local hotels and restaurants to offer tailor made events and am always looking for new ways to make sure customers have cakes that complement their big day’.

Small celebration iced fruit cakes and large cakes have been added to the range and Charlotte now shares her expertise at workshops, to help even a beginner develop the skills to ‘ice your own’ mini cakes and cupcakes. The venues include The Cosy Club and the Mount Somerset Hotel and Spa and prices start at £30.00 per person. All the details are on the Charlotte Jane Cakes website

Charlotte has also developed a range of original cupcake accessories, and her handmade decorative flags are available direct from the Charlotte Jane Cakes online shop

Her recent experiences have encouraged Charlotte to think about how her business acumen can support local charities and she has been appointed Macmillan Corporate Ambassador for Somerset and also supports Penny Brohn Cancer Care Bristol, an organisation that supported her during and after her treatment.

‘As Macmillan Corporate Ambassador for Somerset I am able to network in the business community to ensure businesses appreciate how valuable their support is to local voluntary organisations’.

Charlotte is happy to talk through ideas, so if you’re planning a celebration or would like to learn a new skill, contact her on 01823 461466, 07817 397070 or
