Is the Maldives your dream wedding destination? Follow the lead of these three celebrity couples who held their wedding there
While sun, sea and sand are usually the most sought-after aspects when planning the dream honeymoon, it seems couples are increasingly favouring far-flung destinations for their wedding day too.
Yvonne Bakouris, who has been a wedding planner at Virgin Holidays for 20 years, says: “Pinterest and Instagram have changed the wedding planning process immensely – and made destination weddings seem much more appealing for the average person. Twenty years ago having a destination wedding was fairly unusual, but now 14% of British weddings are held abroad."
The Maldives is one such wedding destination that is growing in popularity, not just because of its remote setting, crystal clear waters and white sand beaches but due to a host of celebrities who have set a trend by hosting their wedding there.
While all non-native couples are required to complete legal preliminaries before arriving in the Maldives, a blessing ceremony can be performed during the day. Here are three celebrity couples who did just that.
Billie Faiers and Greg Shepherd
The latest celebrity couple to opt for a Maldives wedding is The Only Way Is Essex star Billie Faiers and her partner Greg Shepherd. The couple have been together since 2011 and share two children, Nelly and Arthur. The reality TV duo have always spoken of their love for the Maldives and following Greg's proposal to Billie on a Maldivian island in 2014, the couple decided that they couldn't hold their wedding anywhere else.
The wedding planning was heavily documented in Billie's ITVBe show alongside sister Sam, The Mummy Diaries, where viewers learned of her grand plans - including her desire to spend upwards of £30,000 on flowers.
The wedding in Kuramathi was a luxurious affair with the bride wearing a figure-hugging fishtail gown by Berta and the groom arriving by speedboat. Billie and Greg held their ceremony infront of 95 guests and partied until the early hours before more celebrations during the remainder of their holiday.

Isabeli Fontana and Diego Ferrero
Brazilian model Isabeli Fontana and singer Diego Ferrero cemented their marriage at the Soneva Fushi Resort in 2016. Wearing a bridal beach cover-up by Água de Coco - perfect for an island wedding - Isabeli looked picture perfect.
The ceremony featured beautiful archways and a walkway lined with tropical flowers and decorative structures. Guests were seated atop colourful cushions encircled by a heart-shaped arrangement of vibrant grasses, while Isabeli and Diego exchanged vows beneath a focal canopy.
The three-tier blue cake was decorated with a flower cascade and wave-like piped icing, finished with a personalised cake topper depicting the bride and groom.

Rachel Ward and Thomas Cottrell
Social media star Rachel Ward chose the island of Kurumba to celebrate her marriage to fiancé Thomas Cottrell before a second celebration on home soil in Cumbria.
The couple invited 25 of their nearest and dearest to their Maldives wedding in 2018 which saw the bride wear two dresses - one for the day and one for the evening. Rachel even donated her dresses to the hotel as a gift to a Maldivian bride as the staff had been so attentive.
Rachel's Cumbria wedding was also pictured in the 2019 edition of Cheshire Bride magazine, where she even featured as the cover star.
