Caribbean dream

If you want a totally relaxed honeymoon in the Caribbean sun then St Lucia is the island for you says Sian Townsend

When we arrived in St Lucia after four hectic days in New York we noticed a few taxi drivers giggle as we strode by. At first we thought the early morning flight had left us look slightly dishevelled, but we soon found out that in fact it was our gait they found amusing. ‘Relax man… Slow down….You’re in the Caribbean now,’ drawled a nearby driver. Apparently our walk looks more like a run to the island’s inhabitants and once they showed us their impression (arms straight, looking straight ahead and briskly pacing around in the manner of an Olympic walker) we had to admit it was quite funny.

We tried to slow it down a bit, but was hard to automatically flick that switch between hurried city life to virtually-horizontal island life. Luckily once we arrived at our boutique hotel in the north of the island we started to learn how things are done in St Lucia. We were staying at the Calabash Cover Resort and Spa for ten nights in a Water’s Edge Cottage and I couldn’t wait to see our new island home.

The perfect hideaway

We weren’t disappointed. Before reaching our romantic cottage hideaway we were shown the restaurant and bar with stunning views of the bay; then on to the infinity pool with swim-up bar which we quickly agreed would be our second home for the next week or so. Once we arrived at cottage three we gasped and ‘ahh’d’ as we were shown around. As the name suggests the cottages are right on the edge of the sea, each cottage has its own plunge pool with quite spectacular views, as well as a porch area, living room, large air-conditioned bedroom and outdoor rain shower. It had everything a honeymooning couple could ever need and we quickly settled in and spent the next week hidden away from the world in our cottage, only emerging for dinner and cocktails at the pool bar.

Every night we wandered up to the Windsong Restaurant and tucked in to three courses from the varied menu. The food at the resort is quite superb, the set dishes are a spread of Caribbean and English fare all executed to an impressively high standard. It is certainly the best hotel restaurant we had ever been to. The all-inclusive option is worth every penny – there is no limit on what you can have, including alcohol (with the exception of a vintage wine list) and the chef also puts of a range of daily specials to make sure you never tire of the menu.

Total relaxation

To make sure we cleansed ourselves on any remaining stresses we went along to the Ti Spa and enjoyed a couple’s massage. The massage comes as part of the honeymoon package and you are treated to a 50-minute full-body Swedish massage. The therapists were extremely welcoming and even gave us some aloe vera gel when they spotted how our pasty skin had caught the sun.

The infinity pool and swim-up bar is a haven for honeymooners and a great place to go if you felt in need of some new company. We ventured along on many occasions to enjoy a ‘Hummingbird’ or a ‘Mamma Helen’ – our cocktails of choice.

The highlight of our trip was a meal on the beach at Calabash on our last night. The restaurant staff set up our tables on the beach and decorated it with flowers and seashells. We enjoyed a three course meal including a bottle of fizz (again, all part of the all-inclusive honeymoon package) and it was a night we’ll never forget.
