Behind the scenes: Bride Magazine featured photo shoot at Hintlesham Hall, Suffolk

17 Dec 2021

Suffolk-based wedding suppliers came together to create this modern day interpretation of 1920s bridal style in the stunning surrounds of Hintlesham Hall in Ipswich

'1920s with a twist' was the brief for this bridal fashion shoot at Hintlesham Hall, which features in the 2022 edition of Norfolk & Suffolk Bride magazine. Here, the suppliers share the details of the shoot, which are brought to life in a cinematic video by Charlie Millen of Millen Films.

“Hintlesham Hall is a magnificent 16th century Grade I country house set in beautiful, peaceful and mature gardens, with an impressive tree-lined drive. The hall is the perfect setting for your wedding, whether your dream is for a more traditional occasion or a vibrantly spectacular celebration. We love wedding photo shoots, as they give us a chance to showcase how fantastic your wedding day could look. The models, flowers and dresses from this shoot look amazing.” Zoe Bell, events manager at Hintlesham Hall

"I loved the Lily James BBC drama 'The Pursuit of Love’, and I'm also a big fan of Peaky Blinders, so I was so excited to work with a 1920s theme on the shoot. The architecture of Hintlesham Hall is just perfect for the era. The models were absolutely brilliant and really fun to work with, playing on the idea that they were at a tea party and they were getting slowly more tipsy and mischievous as the day went on.” SadieWindscheffel-Clarke, Big Fish Photography

“As soon as the theme of 1920s was mentioned, my mind ran to The Great Gatsby: ostrich feathers, cream pearls and martini cocktail glasses, teamed with beautiful champagne, cream and ivory flowers. With that in mind we provided dramatic, indulgent arrangements for the mantlepiece, ceremony table, pedestal column and urn and styled glass vases, along with a trailing shower bouquet and a hand-tied posy for the bride. I used Vandella roses, Jana spray roses, hydrangeas, phalaenopsis orchids, antirrhinums, stocks, phlox, gypsophila, eucalyptus, eustoma, alstroemeria, delphiniums, gladioli, dendrobium orchids, freesias and ivy trails.” Kaye Souter, Kaye Souter Flowers

“We picked out some gowns with fitting beaded details as well as modern twists to bring a fresh look to the theme. The choice of gowns were well thought out, each had something special, and we were able to create a very cohesive look, working closely with the hair and make-up team. We also added veils and headpieces for some of the shots. We really enjoyed being on hand to dress the models and ensure the gowns all looked beautiful for every photo.” Sharna Bird, shop manager, Just A Day Bridal

“I was delighted to have the opportunity to create make-up looks for this photo shoot. The theme of 1920s and The Great Gatsby is an iconic era and the make-up inspired by this decade is fun and glamorous. I wanted to follow a modern bridal take on the ‘20s, using a dramatic red and vampy plum lip colour paired with soft shimmering eyes. I added a winged eyeliner to bring the looks together and create further drama. For the second look, I focused on day to night, by adding a darker shimmer to the eyes and changing the lip colour from a nude or pretty pink to a vibrant colour. These are simple adjustments which can take your bridal make-up from soft and pretty to evening glam.” Lily Thomas, Makeup Artistry by Lily

“For model Cathy's hair, I opted for a faux bob. This is achieved with a scalp braid underneath and then the hair was pin curled up, set and then, once cooled, taken out and pinned into place. I like leaving a front section down for an assymetrical look. Cathy’s hair was finished off with one of my headbands and feather clips in keeping with the theme.

“For Catherine's hair, I added hair extensions in No 4: Brunette, available from Undercover Glamour. Catherine's own hair is very thin and quite short, and we wanted to achieve a loose looking Hollywood wave. Once the extensions were added, I curled small sections of hair and pinned to cool, then brushed out for the waved effect. I accessorised with various headbands from Just A Day Bridal.” Gemma Markham, Beautiful Hair By Gemma

“It was such a fun shoot to be involved with and to work with all the amazing suppliers. I always love shooting at Hintlesham Hall because it is such a beautiful venue. My job on the shoot was to capture some behind the scenes footage that will be used to show how it all comes together. I also captured some of the gorgeous dresses we used for the shoot. I usually film weddings throughout the year, so it was really nice to work on something different.” Charlie Millen, Millen Films
