Behind the scenes

Andre and Suzanne Axford-Bryars from Belle Momenti Photography take us behind the scenes of the photo-shoot in Hitchin’s lavender fields, which provided the Bride magazine front cover this year

As well as having the very great pleasure (and honour) of photographing our lovely bridal couple’s weddings each year, in fabulous locations across the UK and abroad – typically in Cyprus, France and Italy – we also like to set up a ‘project shoot’. Also known as an ‘inspirational shoot’, this gives us the chance to try new techniques and setups, with models as brides, and to work alongside some the wedding industry’s most talented vendors.

We absolutely love Hitchin Lavender Farm; it’s tranquillity, the heady aroma of the blooms as you wander through them in the summer months and perhaps more importantly for us, the incredible backdrop that the lavender fields make for photographs. After speaking with the owners, we decided we would create an inspirational shoot there to really bring out the romance of the setting. For those of you that haven’t yet visited (and we would urge that you do), think of it as a little bit of Provence in the Hertfordshire countryside – with sweeping lavender fields that seem to rise up to meet the sky, flanked by golden crops to one side and sun flowers on the other. It seemed only natural that the style of the shoot should follow the relaxed beauty of the surroundings, with hand-tied bouquets, and simple (almost Bohemian) floral crowns with stylish hair/makeup, bridal gowns and accessories, to really bring this look to life.

After postponing the shoot (due to a sudden change in what had been an incredible British Summer), the sun was shining on us for our second attempt. We managed to capture some beautiful images of our stunning models, Ellen and Lucy, before the heavens opened once more! With only half of the shoot completed, we moved under cover, to an outside area where visitors would normally sit to drink tea and have a slice of one the Lavender Farm’s renowned freshly baked cakes. Although it was still raining, the lighting was still good enough to photograph in and we completed the shoot with some slightly different images to what we’d envisaged, including using the farm’s tractor as a backdrop.

We were delighted when the editor of Bride (Herts-Beds-Cambs) magazine agreed to feature the shoot in the edition planned for 2014, and at a later date, absolutely thrilled to hear that one of the images had been selected for the front cover! Also featured is one of our lovely bridal couples in a real wedding article. Bride magazine (2014 edition) was launched at the two day Bride: The Wedding Show at Knebworth Park on January 11-12. This is rapidly becoming known as ‘the’ bridal show for couples to attend at the beginning of the year, with over 100 exhibitors and a fabulous, choreographed catwalk show that provided much entertainment!

Already 2014 is looking quite busy for us, and we’re very much looking forward to the year ahead, with beautiful new UK locations, destination weddings and even a pre-wedding shoot in Cyprus for one of our UK couples! We do have some availability for weddings this year and are already taking bookings for 2015.
