Beautiful Bruisyard Hall

The stunning and recently renovated Bruisyard Hall, which is set within a tranquil 700-acre private country estate, has been in existence since 1354 and is a venue truly steeped in history.

What’s also incredible is that the one and same Rous family has owned it for the last 400 years so to claim that it is a wedding venue with a distinct sense of homeliness is an understatement – the family atmosphere it exudes has existed and evolved during the last four centuries. These factors, combined with the beautifully appointed results of restoration and modernisation projects, make it an exceptional and luxurious wedding venue.

While many of the hall’s original features remain intact including oak staircases, oak-beamed attics and even a ‘sweet-toned bell’, it is possible to trace the architectural changes and renovations that have taken place over the years. The latest undertaking, completed in February 2013, was no mean feat as Paul Rous explains: “As the hall is listed there was a lot of planning and discussions with the council and English Heritage every step of the way which meant that a lot of investigative work, reporting and tweaking was done throughout the project. The work was undertaken to improve the quality of the stay for guests. A lot of effort and resources have gone into making sure the hall feels like a private home but at a 5 star hotel quality.”

For Laura Fairhead, Bruisyard Hall’s events manager, the tangible history and the aspiration of continually maintaining and adding to it gives rise to a very special wedding day. She asserts: “One of the things that makes Bruisyard Hall so special is the sense of history that gives the place so much character. Each wedding that we host adds something unique to the identity of the hall. The renovation project has shown just how important it is to the team to honour the narrative of the hall’s life, and that goes for what is to come as much as what has been. This is one of the reasons we take such pride in attending to each wedding couple on an individual basis – we’re adding to their special day, and in turn they are giving another to the hall.”

Bruisyard Hall is a flexible wedding venue. For those after a church ceremony, the Grade I listed church in Bruisyard village is a short walk away. Couples keen to marry within the grounds of the estate have two options: either a wedding within the 17th century beamed Bruisyard Barn (with up to 140 seated guests) or the intimate alternative of marrying within the drawing room at the hall (suitable for up to 30 guests). In every case, the backdrop is striking and historic.

In terms of the wedding party, the hall provides 10 bedrooms including the bridal suite – a good number to ensure family members and close friends can be accommodated. Hiring the adjacent barn also provides access to further accommodation as well as the medieval hall, minstrel’s gallery and banqueting hall, with two additional en-suite bedrooms in a wing of their own. The combination of the hall and barn offers wedding parties accommodation for up to 24 guests.

When opting for Bruisyard Hall, couples receive more than just the wedding venue – they gain support with every aspect of the big day. Laura elucidates: “When hiring Bruisyard Hall for your wedding, you receive my personal assistance leading up to and on the day – whether it’s helping with timings, recommending suppliers, booking them on your behalf or simply being available to help ease the load, I’m here for couples as much or as little as they like. I liaise with all suppliers prior to the wedding to ensure a seamless running on the day itself. My colleague, Tim, is also on hand to assist with concierge services, such as booking accommodation or travel on behalf of the couple or their guests. As we see more and more couples hiring the hall and barn together, the wedding itself flows over a weekend – activities and catering are available for the remainder of the weekend and we can assist with this too. Together, our roles help to relieve some of the stress and let the couples focus on what’s important – enjoying their day!”

Working tirelessly to deliver the perfect wedding means that Laura and the Bruisyard Estate team are emotionally invested in the day and this, coupled with having such an incredible and inspiring place of work, is what Laura particularly enjoys about her role. She says: “Without sounding too cheesy, I love being part of each couple’s day – seeing how each wedding is created around them, the story behind each element and the memories that are created on the day itself. Being a part of that is really special. And of course, working at such a beautiful venue.”
