Are extensions the right choice for your bridal hair?

28 Apr 2016

Many of us would opt for long and lustrous length on our big day, but are extensions really the right choice for you? Celebrity extensionist, Inanch Emir of Inanch London who has styled the locks of Michelle Keegan and Rochelle Humes, offers some advice

You’ve browsed some beautiful bridal hair images but your hair won’t grow to that length in time or will you ever have enough hair to create that statement up-do? Hair extensions may be the perfect solution for tumbling tresses, ultra volume or even to inject some colour in to your hairstyle.

Multi award-winning celebrity hair extensionist, Inanch Emir of Inanch London and founder of her own brand of extensions, Gold Class Hair, shares her thoughts on extending your locks for your big day.

Plan in advance

Planning is a huge part of your wedding and your hair is no different. As soon as you are ready to look at this, book a consultation with a certified hair extensionist to talk more about the look, colour and effect you are are after. Images are great at helping talk things through, so take some examples of what you like, and don’t like, with you. If you already know about your dress and veil or hair accessories, then take this information with you too.

Discuss your needs

The consultation is primarily to look at your suitability for extensions. At Inanch London, we look at the condition of your hair and scalp first. Extensions are a great way to enhance the health of your hair - to get it to look its very best, and we can recommend some treatments and at home hair-care regimes to help here.

Good extensions are all about making them look natural, so nobody knows you are wearing them.  We will match the extension hair and extension texture to your own hair - from straight and natural waves through to curly. Then we look to colour-match or maybe even work with you to change your hair colour to enhance your skin and eyes. We may even suggest just adding in some highlights to contour your face.

Protect and perfect

A key factor to the type of extensions you have will be your hair care regime to maintain them. We would always recommend you opt for 100% human hair extensions so that you can style the hair with heated tools. Treat the hair with the best reputable brand you can afford. Pre-bonded extensions are great value for money and can last up to four months in your hair with care. But ultimately, hair extensions require additional care that you need to commit to to be able to enjoy them and to make sure they look their best on the big day and for the honeymoon.

Alternative options

If the extra time is not for you, then maybe consider clip-ins for the day. These can be really good for low buns and chignons. Some brands do not recommend wearing extensions abroad as the water filtration systems affect the colour and condition, so check this with your stylist and again maybe opt for clip-ins. Even clip-ins should be manufactured using 100% human hair in order to achieve that natural look.

Whichever method you decide, give yourself plenty of time and have your extensions fitted around two weeks prior to your big day. This will give you time to get comfortable with them and to have any tweaks made to them if you’re finding them difficult to manage.
