An English stately home wedding in Somerset: Rebecca and Tom Girdley

05 May 2016

Blush pink and navy blue offered the colour palette for this stunning spring wedding at St Audries Park in Somerset

How did you meet?

Tom: On Rebecca's 18th birthday in a quiet pub in the heart of Somerset. Rebecca was out having a few drinks with friends for her birthday and Tom was having a few drinks with some friends from work and as soon as I saw her I just knew I had to talk to her.

Tell us about the proposal.

Tom completely surprised Rebecca when he got down on one knee and pulled out a ring on
Christmas day.

What was the theme of the day, and did you have a colour scheme?

The colour scheme was blush pink and blue and the theme was English stately home.

For the bride, when did you know that you had found 'the dress'?

It was the second bridal shop I went to. I wasn't overly keen on the dress at first, but tried it on to be polite as the shop owner suggested. As soon as i saw myself in it I instantly knew it was the one and fell in love and didn't leave the shop without it.

For the groom, where did you find your suit?

As a former Royal Marine Commando, it seemed only natural to wear my Blues and I sought special permission from the Colonel to wear it.

Tell us about your floral arrangements.

I created the centre pieces myself the day before as I bought hundreds of roses all in our colour scheme. Myself and my bridesmaids made all the arrangements the night before the wedding, alongside getting ready in the bridal dressing room.

How did you feel as you walked down the aisle?

I felt so nervous as soon as I saw Tom, I just could stop smiling and nearly cried as I saw him well up and the best man behind him.

What was your most memorable moment?

Tom: Seeing Rebecca for the first time walking down the aisle.

Rebecca: As myself and the bridal party were walking across the grounds to the ceremony our little girl who was a flower girl (Elle, who is almost three) said: "We are all princess girls, aren't we?" with the biggest smile across her face. It was so adorable.

What was the most challenging aspect of planning this wedding?

The seating plan, with people dropping out and divorced parents it was certainly a challenge.

Our rings as we will be wearing them for the rest of our lives.

What song did you choose for your first dance, and why?

The Corrs - Runaway. It's a song that we both loved from childhood and grew up listening to.

Tell us about your wedding cake.

The cake was a three-tier sponge cake. The first tier was vanilla sponge, the middle was lemon and the top tier was coffee sponge. Covered in ivory icing and topped with our themed flowers.

If you could go back and change anything, what would it be?

The only thing we would change is to try and take more of the day in and soak up as much as the atmosphere as possible. It all went so fast.

Where did you go on honeymoon?

We haven't been on a honeymoon, we are hoping to save and hopefully next year book an amazing holiday together.

Do you have any advice for couples in the planning stages?

Try and shop in the January sales! We picked up so many bargains and the flower girls' dresses were discounted to £40 each, plus my dress was a massive saving.
