Oliver Lall of Orchard Lane Photography details how he and a host of Suffolk suppliers created this captivating coastal wedding shoot in Southwold
Featuring a beachy bridal look, whimsical floral arrangements and a cool and contemporary venue, this shoot in Southwold offers the key components for a modern-day wedding beside the seaside. Photographer Oliver Lall tells us more...
What was the inspiration behind the shoot?
I love Southwold as a location and I thought shooting there in the winter would give us a slightly unique and moody look. Our wonderful model, Megan, even bravely agreed for us to shoot on the beach. We did, however, have snow and freezing winds to contend with. When the snow had eased and the sun came out, we ventured outside for the final shots on the beach. The cold winter sun, stormy clouds in the distance and a windswept Megan made for some absolutely breathtaking photos.
Tell us a little bit about the venue and why it was chosen.
While we waited out in the snow, we were given the lucky opportunity to shoot at the newly refurbished Swan Hotel in the centre of town. This perfectly classic hotel has had a stylish modern makeover, filled with nautical designs and quintessentially Southwold touches such as the copper light fixtures and complimentary Adnams Gin. As a wedding venue itself, it was the perfect setting for our winter shoot.
What did you choose for the flower arrangements?
Becky at Love Frank chose hydrangeas from her garden that she'd dried and used in both the crowns. Becky mixed dried and faux ferns, vanilla grass, a variety of eucalyptus and small succulents, creating a fresh aesthetic with lots of greenery and wild, boho flowers - something that could stand apart from a posy arrangement... and withstand coastal weather.
What kind of look did you want to achieve with the make-up, hair and outfits for the bride?
Brooke at Boho Beauty Box kept Megan’s hair wild and free. She applied a dry wax spray to tame flyaways and ran her fingers through Megan's hair to define her curls. Brooke kept the make-up fresh with a flawless base and created bridal-worthy smokey eyes with rose gold glitter accents and glowing pink cheeks.
What dresses were used in the shoot?
The Willow dress, shown here in Ivory, is Willow & Pearl's best-selling multi-way dress. It's an affordable dress for brides that can be wrapped and worn in endless ways. The Fern dress, shown in Blush, comes from the boutique's range of designer dresses that can be customised with one of five sleeve styles.
