A Viking-inspired wedding shoot in Devon

09 Jul 2019

Considering a Viking wedding theme? Take a look at this styled shoot which features beautiful details inspired by the Viking age

Daniella Winchester-Leigh of Magpie Event Planning shares the details of this Viking-inspired wedding shoot, which showcases the beauty of the Norse seafarers.

What was the inspiration behind the shoot?

The shoot was inspired by a brand new wedding venue in Black Torrington in Devon - Reforge Retreat. The owners, Faith and Jules, have a passion for Viking history including having a Viking themed bar on the land. They were keen to introduce their venue using this theme.

The venue features 20 acres of land, historical plants, lakes, family designed and built gazebos and views for miles. Faith and Jules have a great enthusiasm for their venue and have plans to develop the barn and build more gazebos in the future.

What did you choose for the flower arrangements?

Harriett chose some stunning wildflowers, incorporating the deep red ribbons to tie in with the rest of the décor. A skull was placed in the bouquet to make it a little alternative.

What kind of look did you want to achieve with the make-up, hair and outfits for the bride and groom?

I wanted to create the strong Viking image with the bride and groom while still having a romantic feel. Models Sarah and Ben made the perfect couple, demonstrating both a delicate and alternative aesthetic.

What was the thinking behind the décor for the shoot? How did you tie it all together?

I was very keen to have tubes and animal skulls. Coutts Events provided a beautiful handmade antique table and chairs set which created the perfect base for the pieces we had collected for the shoot.

What kind of accessories were used to create these looks and why?

A fabulous tiara from The Lucky Sixpence, hand-painted jacket from Sammy Lea's Retro Emporium and bespoke cake from Claire's Sweet Temptations tied the theme together with some pieces to incorporate the skulls and fierce Viking woman look that we were going for.
